Bio:

Why does Cal have both a reputation for being the perfect opening DJ AND for throwing down incredible headlining sets? Two simple reasons.

First, he’s a prolific crate-digger who has married the mindset and skills of a pre-digital DJ with the vast online music resources and powerful discovery tools available to a modern day music publisher. Picture a DJ on two vinyl turntables, without the aid of a computer, and a record collection at his disposal which could fill from floor to ceiling every inch of a 1200 square foot apartment.

Second, he’s seen more live performances in the last four years than the worlds most heavily touring DJs. But instead of listening to his own same DJ-set every night, Cal has been out exploring both the world’s finest musicians AND the next big thing that you haven’t heard of yet.

The result is a DJ who knows how to build a party. From packing out the dance floor to blowing the roof off at 1am, Cal nails it every time. A DJ’s job is more than just breaking records, playing exclusives, and knowing the biggest tunes; it’s Cal’s superior ability to connect with his audience that has resulted in his being called on to support some of the biggest names in dance music AND headline big rooms. For Cal, breaking records and playing exclusives just comes with the territory of being a respected taste-making music blogger, with a passion for delivering the excitement of hearing “that amazing track” for the first time, in the context he loves most – the live performance.

Download the Basic Physics full-length album [Interview + MP3]

liftoff

In advance of his first full-length effort I interviewed Alex Syse, aka Basic Physics, so that you guys might get a taste of the man behind some of 2011′s biggest and baddest blogosphere bootlegs. That’s often a dirty word – bootleg – in this industry. It usually connotes a lack of originality, and almost invariably [...]

Watch OK Go play over 1000 instruments in their new music video

okgo

To execute this monumental and frankly insane video, OK Go set up over 1000 instruments over two miles of desert outside Los Angeles. It took 4 months of preparation and 4 days of recording, and at no point did they use stand-ins. This version of Needing/Getting was recorded as they sang while playing the instrument [...]

Listen to new At Dawn We Rage before next month’s release

adwr

I first became excited about ADWR in late 2010, when they came out of the gates strong with a wicked remix of Dada Life’s Unleash the F*cking Dada. The track, predictably, blew up as did their booking schedule, and ever since their productions have been ever increasing in quality. It looks as though the pair [...]

Saturday Mixcast #71: Ant Brooks + Umek

saturdaymixcast-250h

For this week’s edition of the Mixcast, I’m proud to feature Ant Brook’s first podcast of the year. This one features a new track from the man himself, his usual top notch chart selections, and an unreal guest mix from 1605 label-boss Umek – a label we covered extensively in 2011, especially following the release [...]

New Killabits track charting on Beatport [Stream]

killabits

Jeuce’s As We Move remixes EP was released just five days ago with contributions from Kastle and Dirty Disco Youth. The Killabits also rack up a remix credit, and have seen their contribution rise through the Beatport Glitch Hop chart quickly. At the time of publication it’s currently sitting at #12, and sure to raise [...]

Stream Laura Jones’ and Gavin Herlihy’s debut on Crosstown Rebels

cross

It’s the case that forward-looking and quality of production are properties of music that almost invariably sit on opposite ends of a spectrum, but Crosstown Rebels really broke that model in 2011 with a string of releases for artists such as Maceo Plex, Subb-an, Damian Lazarus, Soul Clap, Art Department, and Deniz Kurtel (to name [...]
