Dubstep has always been about potential; the potential to change popular music, and the potential to become popular music. It is unsurprising then, that Dubstep’s top producers are making music that is less bang and more melody. While the underground may love the dirty, the potential to win over all audiences is in clean and sweet basslines. Skream’s remix of La Roux, my case in point, was easily the crossover hit of last summer.
Skream and Benga (Magentic Man), Rusko, and Caspa; these forefathers of the genre have been crucial to the maturation of Dubstep. Their impact on popular music will only continue to be felt, and soon everyone will feel the rumble.
