Since 1997 Germany’s Jazzanova has been bringing us their special brand of deep house, nu jazz and broken beat. I remember spinning a lot of their tunes at Liquids Lounge on College Street, (Now Toi Bar), back when I was a house D.J. I was billed as “and guest” on flyers for Jenneric parties like “The Return of Smooth” with Eric Abelev, Kid Vez and Aaron Mossey. It was a “house” night where we would spin everything from progressive to deep house, bossa and latin house music. Until now, whenever I saw a Jazzanova release I knew to expect a certain sound that would be perfect for spinning along side artists like Joe Claussell, Masters at Work, Miguel Migs and Thievery Corporation.
On October 24th 2008 Jazzanova released their new album “Of All Things” and what I heard kind of shocked me. I was sifting through the records at Play De Record on Yonge Street and Jason Palma who usually grabs a stack of Disco, Soul, Funk, Hip Hop and Funky breaks for me said “Have you heard the new Jazzanova yet?”
“I don’t really play that kind of jazzy deep house stuff anymore” I said. Then he put on the latest single “Let me Show Ya”  and I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. Funky Soul ryhthms and beats compareable to the likes of Jamie Lidell, Dwele, Lefities Soul Connection, and Lucinda Sims and The Lone Stars. If you liked Jamie Lidell’s latest opus, “Jim” then I’m sure you’ll dig Jazzanova’s “Of All Things.” Here are the first two singles “Let Me Show Ya'” and “I Can See” and remixes from Henrik Schwarz, Holy Ghost! and Mark E (which sounds a lot more like the old Jazzanova). Enjoy!
