The automated, carnal intensity of Hotflush head Scuba’s latest dub of Jimmy Edgar’s Sex Drive brings to mind J.G. Ballard’s groundbreaking fantasy novel Crash. Adapted as a film by David Cronenberg, Crash chronicles the bizarre inner-workings of a car-collision crazed sex cult. Here, Scuba presents the aural equivalent of Crash, matching cold, mechanical female vocal refrains (“pull back the seat and let me die, then take me on a sex drive”) with deep acid house basslines and techno percussion. The result is a rapturous invocation of an adrenaline and gasoline-fueled sexual venture followed by an imminent death.
