Le Freak C’est Keek (undeadisco, Sticky Fingers, Rapture) gave me a heads up to this new track, ‘Zoo Comunale’ by Marcin Czubala and Hugo. Below find it, and a techy remix by Czubala, who passed through Detroit this past Saturday. She told me to keep this track mum, but y’all know I can’t resist. Keeks, I won’t give away ALL your secrets! ^_^
– Paul Revered (undeadisco)
Marcin Czubala is not your typical techno artist. Part of this might have to do with the fact that he hails from Poland, not Berlin. Part of it is connected to his classical music studies: between 1991 and 1994 he performed in over 300 concerts, including the Nantes Festival, Warsaw Autumn, and even performances with the experimental-music giant Krzysztof Penderecki. Ultimately, though, what sets Marcin apart is his personal style, that most difficult to define of all musical criteria. While grounded in minimal house and techno, Marcin’s work always bears his unmistakable signature: slinky, bouncy, and full of mystery and seduction.
Italy’s Hugo is a classically trained jazz musician who fell in love with electronic music in the 90s. So it’s fitting that you can hear whispers of Funkadelic and Herbie Hancock behind the curtain, although Hugo’s latest productions go beyond superficial influences, conceived through profound emotion and awareness of non-ordinary mental spaces. Following the tradition of his spiritual fathers, Hugo has embarked on a journey into finding his own style – sexy, loose, riff-oriented and danceable – and is constantly improving his ability to amalgamate distinct sounds into a cohesive whole. Despite this conceptual framework, Hugo never takes himself too seriously, always maintaining a sense of humor in his production work.
