Toronto based producer HRMXNY has had a banner year. From landing a residency at Toronto’s legendary Hoxton nightclub at only 19 years old to scoring sets at Bestival and Mad Decent Block Party, this budding producer, named one of NOW Magazine’s “Ones to Watch” in 2015, returns in stellar form with a stunning sophomore EP.
“Strange as it seems” continues the hazy, lo-fi sounds of his debut “In Time” but takes it to another level. With features from Toronto based rappers TylorJ and Preme and gorgeous vocals from Soulection’s Alcordo and emerging talent Jon Vinyl, this 7 track tale of lost love and life in the city speaks to a new generation of electronic music fans, tired of consuming the same old remixes and amped up club “bangers”. Raw, real and emotionally exposed, HRMXNY makes another massive move towards stardom by putting it all on the line instead of playing it safe. The title cut “Strange as it Seems” and the closer “Nightlife” perfectly bookend a bittwersweet trip through the mind of still growing talent, with lush, soulful synths and sharp drum programming propelling the tracks, and interludes giving the package an almost cinematic feel.
This EP arrives right on time for lonely winter nights spent waiting for that message reply to come. This isn’t party music, it’s a soundtrack to living lost and lonely in the new millennium with occasional moments of unbridled joy that make it all worth the hustle.
