Montréal duo Grown Folk are a curious entity. Their indiscriminate approach to production exemplifies the ever-expanding overlap between electronica and hip-hop today. Of the two 12″s they’ve released this year, one is unmistakably house (The Boat / Keep Few Near) while the other, featuring Oakland rap collective Main Attrakionz, is an intriguing blend of hazy hip-hop (Cloud City EP). On their new remix of North Carolina rapper Deniro Farrar & Northwestern production duo Blue Sky Black Death’s “Just In the Case the World Ends”, Grown Folk embrace their split personality, discreetly invoking house music stylings over resounding hip-hop drum patterns.
