During Canadian Music Week I hustled around to catch as much of the action as possible. Relying on a few connections to get a lot of great content, it was a great experience. North by North East on the other hand was a chance for us to increase our involvement exponentially.

Collaborating with a few venues and companies across the city we provided free passes to some of you who follow us on Facebook and Twitter. Yeah, ok, you saw a show or two, you went out a night or two; but if you think you know, you have no idea.

For most sunrises would mark the beginning the day, but for me, was often my cue to head home. With some of the best shows of the week going until 4 am, it should come as no surprise that this was one of the most tiring weeks of my life. Tiring to the point that I as I write this I am waiting to fly to Winnipeg where I will sleep for 2 days only to return for Kill the Noise and another week and a half of 4 AM last calls.

Ok, so I am tired, but was it worth it? Well, my week started before NXNE had actually begun. Passion Pit played their first Toronto show at Lee’s Palace on Tuesday, and since I am generally unable to recognize a good time to go home, I ended up at the after party speaking with The Harlem Shakes, the group that opened for Passion Pit. Awesome dudes whom we hope we can link up with in the near future for some form of cool online collaboration. From there I ended in Trinity Bellwoods Park and eventually rolled into my house a little bit before the sun came up, in retrospect, that was a small victory.

Wednesday night as I arrived at The Drake Hotel the underground as already at capacity (it was only 11 PM). After managing to finagle my way into the basement, I was able to catch the main reason why I came out, Lioness. The crowd was pleased with scorching vocals. Over to The Social a showcase of some local talent, headlined by Nu Ravers on the Block. Gingy played right before the headlining act and as always left me wanting more. Gingy has a taste for electronic music that allows him to play songs that I never knew I wanted to hear, possibly one of the reasons why he is one of my favorite selectors in the city. I got home early, around 4 am, with the hopes of being ready for what I knew would be 4 of the most grueling yet worthwhile nights of the summer.

When your favorite DJ’s favorite DJ Bird Peterson played The Social, it was one of those moments where you knew you were at a show that in just over a year you will be able to be that dude who gets to say, “Oh yeah, I was at their first show in Toronto back in 2009, I knew he was going to be a big deal.” Experienced DJs are always two steps ahead and it was great to hear Bird use his expertise to tease a crowd of both die-hard electronic music lovers as well as those along for the ride. The local talent that was supporting him consisted of a couple of great up and comers, Andy Ares, St Mandrew, Kay Gee and Benny Bumpdatshit (from Golden Gloves). I can’t remember getting to bed, but I am happy I did.

Friday had a lot in store. Cal and I headed down to The Drake to interview TMDP who were performing live in the YYZ Records showcase. It was great talking to them and I am excited for both their upcoming tour and production they have in the works. (The interview will be posted shortly). After grabbing a bite to eat we headed over to our good friend, photographer Chris “CBot’ Leung’s new studio space to celebrate its grand opening. Working with Steve Carty, Javier Lovera, Jalani Morga, and Stefania Sgambulleri will be great for his young career and we really do wish him the best. Eventually Klever jumped in front of the camera and got some impromptu shots taken. Klever’s ability on the decks KILLED on Friday night at Circa. By combining turntablism with electronic music Klever’s live mixes often dwarf the edits that many other DJs create before their sets. Chopping up tracks and mashing songs together like I’ve never heard before, he didn’t disappoint the crowd of colleagues on stage. (Video coming shortly) To end off the night we headed to Wrongbar to catch the tail end of the night, with Rynecologist killing the dancefloor, everyone got loose as I chanted the lyrics to Juicy with Klever and company. Dancehall tunes, Electro, Hip Hop and more set a tone that kept me up until I was able to mooch a ride home from Ryne’s brother.

With Saturday being the most highly anticipated day of my week. It was northing short of perfect. Fake Blood, Fake Blood, Fake Blood. But first, let me just say that Barletta played one of the best sets I have ever heard him play, riling the crowd up into a frenzy. This was the night, and holly shit did it not disappoint. Easily one of my favorite nights of this whole summer, it was pandemonium and crowd surfing, a night of pure ecstasy. Giving my wallet, keys, and phone to a friend who was later forgotten might have been a mistake, but hey, as long as it’s all worth it in the end.

To wrap things up we were fortunate enough to help host the MMVA after party at Circa. K-Os’ DJ set was definitely enjoyed by the crew we brought out and Rob Dyer’s signature S Club tracks got people going like they were back in grade 4. The night played out slowly, and to a certain extent painfully, as I slowly realized just how burnt out I was.

So here’s to it and from it, and to it again. And for those who get to it to don’t do it, may they never get to it to do it again. We did it, and we will definitely do it again, hopefully you will all join us next time, here on the Salacious Sound show.

DJ Klever is one of the best turntablists I’ve seen perform live. His show at West Lounge was one of those nights that people are still giving me a hard time for missing. Once a runner up for the World DMC Chapionchip, Klever is one of the best dudes in the world playing electronic music. A lot of people compare him to A-Trak, and many people argue that Klever is better when making that comparison. Supported by DJ Barbi who has recently performed at DEMF and thrown a whild bash for the launch of her Intelligenix label; with Meech opening up the night.

The reasons to go see Fake Blood are relatively self explanatory. One of the most celebrated electronic artists on the blogosphere there are just some parties that you KNOW will force you to let loose and move all night. Hopefully it doesn’t turn into the Surkin or Busy P show with everyone trying to dance around the DJ. But regardless you know the music will be amazing and if you look to the left and see someone losing their mind, its probably me. Especially try to find me when Little Boots – Stuck on Repeat or Hot Chip – Touch to Much drops.

Not often do I hear a house/electro/dubstep/track that realllllly floors me; congrats to Chewy Chocolate Cookies. He’s done it. Not only did his new original material (off of his new EP Apocalypse) find it’s way onto repeat, but his remixes of The Cool Kids’ 88 and Adele’s Hometown Glory have left my speakers melting.

Absolutely melting…

Although I didn’t find his previous material too impressive (Profondo Rosso, Cheeseburgers and Time) but the Chewy Chocolate Cookies’ name has been cleared and in ’09 you’re definitely going to want to keep an eye on him.

Hello all,

For those of you who have been following us you may have noticed that my posting pace has slowed. Having been mad busy over the past 4 days I haven’t had a chance to get on here as much. I have a TON of music I have been sleeping on and want to share. Honestly I want to let the tracks talk for themselves. One of them is a classic from a little bit ago and the rest have been floating around more recently. Comment and I’ll definitely respond to get some individual track dialogue going, but for now just ENJOY!
