Meet indie-dance duo The Wheel Wells

Toronto based Indie-Dance duo The Wheel Wells are a weekly staple at Queen Street watering hole Czehoski, for their weekly dance parties and monthly Family Fridays events, which bring local talent to the stage of Toronto’s next hidden gem.

Through the success of their events, the pair just handed over a $1000 cheque to MusiCounts this week from proceeds raised at Czehoski.

Don’t think they are confined to the home base venue. You will soon be able to catch The Wheel Wells at Wrongbar every month, starting this spring, for the disco house series, Pyramid Club. Also be sure to check out their opening set for Grandtheft on Friday March 16th at The Hoxton.

The Wheel Wells have released their latest single ‘Morning Light’. These two have just released their single Morning Light, and have a number of other tracks I’d like to share with you today.

Battery Collection debuts on Kid Without Radio

There were a few ways to begin this review: some good, some bad, but none quite right. So let’s begin with just the facts.

Kid Without Radio is a netlabel, notably featuring underground electronic artists such as Egadz and Edison.
Battery Collection is the newest artist on Kid Without Radio and his debut LP is titled Future Ruins.
Bottom line: Future Ruins is worth your attention if you dig minimalism and you’re willing to forgive its rough edges.

What kind of profound cultural impact, if any, electronic music has had in the last three decades is an odd question. After all, it’s the music of nightlife, of temporary fits of passion, and of none-too-discrete eloping. It’s a genre of music that’s defined more by hedonism than it is by introspection.

And to be fair, it rarely attempts to be anything else. It’s a sound that’s not only comfortable with being up at 4 A.M. and having a half-bottle of Jack to go, but fundamentally embraces it. That’s why electronic artists rarely have to consider the consequences of selling out – there isn’t much pretense in the first place.

Perhaps that’s why artists who push the structural boundaries of the genre are often in welcome supply. They break hooks down to their barest essentials, and then add back only what’s absolutely necessary. They generally do not receive wide acclaim, but their sound is nonetheless a welcome respite of creativity. Battery Collection is one of those artists.

His debut, Future Ruins, is the kind of electronic music which exposes the great possibility of emotive range in the genre. It breathes a kind of intimacy in the synth that’s made possible only because of his rejection of typical production techniques. The Kid Without Radio presser claims, almost unbelievably, that “everything is performed live. No sequencing. No samples. No track warping.”

Old Heroes, Missing Friends is pipe full of summer optimism, and is easily the best track on the LP. That’s a good thing too, because it also happens to be one of two tracks that are remixed by Edison and Egadz, respectively (Unauthorized Biography being the other).

This isn’t a release without flaws. It’s purposefully rough, and that’s not something we’re accustomed to listening to these days. It’s also very easy to mistake its minimalism for an unsophisticated sound.

But Future Ruins seems less about ultra-polished production values than it is about exploring the limits of electronic music, and of creating a unique, penetrating sound.

I have previously featured Mercurius FM’s work on the site. He has been producing remixes of some awesome groups and I am anticipating a couple of upcoming tracks he has mentioned plans to remix. For now I have his latest track, an uptempo remix of Queen’s classic “Another One Bites the Dust”. As an artist who believe a remix should maintain the heart of the original and that artists should be careful not to consider sampling to be the same as remixing he stays true to his beliefs.

I have recently noticed the amount of B’more influenced Electro that has been bursting onto the scene. B’more club music has always been one of the more funky forms of electronic music out there. I recently came across a remix which berry accurately characterizes what I am getting at. This remix takes on the Hip Hop track I Go 5 On It and pairs electro synths which B’more breakdowns.

Glitchy Beatles and Fidgety Prodigy

This Beatles remix truly begs the question, why is it called a remix when it bares no resemblance to the original and the vocal sample is unrecognizable? More on this question in later posts because the difference in the “remix” vs. “original” definition in Hip Hop and House based on sampling intrigues me. The Prodigy Remix is a solid track that I think would do well in clubs. Fidgets Live is Small Houses has an AWESOME track name, and I love that sample early in the song, can anyone pinpoint it? This track is very nice a glitchy with a gra EH! type of yell at about 3 minutes in kind of like Raven by Proxy (I’m about to post another entry about this song because a few people I’ve talked to still haven’t heard it, or at least don’t know it by name and that is a travesty). Finally what would a glitchy, fidgity post be without some Crookers!

Finally 3 High Quality Love Lockdown Remixes

(A short, personal Kanye interview)

Love Lockdown was one of the most remixed songs of 2008. A lot of those remixes were sloppy, many of them were unoriginal, and I wasn’t a fan of most of them. The Chew Fu remix became one of the accepted bests, however, it still never blew me away. Perhaps, to a certain extent this remix culture that the internet has fostered, the same culture that I feel has so much potential, also incentives rushed releases that aren’t properly developed.

Maurice Joshua has been producing funky house for quite some time now and when I came across his remix of Love Lockdown I was instantly excited. Recently we have talked a lot about how house is only getting harder, however, that doesn’t mean that I don’t love to hear something funky and melodic – in fact outside of a club a prefer it. I do want to bring our readers attention to what happens about halfway through the song, this producer, known for keeping it funky and melodic, briefly drops into some heavy bass and syncopated drums that sound a lot like Dubstep. The pitch of the vocals has been adjusted to match the song, a step that many remixers seem to forget about. This remix is very well put together and definitely the most salacious Love Lockdown remix I have heard.

I have included two other remixes that I came across recently. The 1994 Pilot Priest Remix is probably the best electro remix of the song, it was included in our post on M, M & M. It also makes one question what exactly a house remix is. Hip Hop producers sample for their original productions in the same fashion that this remix samples Love Lockdown, why is that? (I’d love to hear some feedback from readers on this). The Beat Thrillerz remix’s approach is a little bit more of a trance track than the other two but I still think it is better than most of the rushed remixes that hit the web right after the original leaked onto the net.

I will keep this brief. Not much needs to be said about this remix. Shook Ones by Mobb Deep is one of the biggest Hip Hop songs to ever be released. Turning Shook Ones into an electro track is a huge undertaking, one which could result in a tremendous let down, but this remix is BOMB! It’s tremendously impressive that DJ Fashen’s remix does this legendary track justice.

Britney Spears has had one hell of a year. She’s come back from the fringes of Hollywood’s insane asylum to retake her position in the limelight. I am not surprised that she feels as if she is in a circus. With all that has happened to her and her family over the last few years it is no wondering that the princess of pop is back with a vengeance to try and claim her throne as queen.

Womanizer was a huge release which topped the charts and had everyone with a drum machine and keyboard trying to improve the track. There were many solid remixes, including the Mike Gonek and Benny Benassi remixes previously featured here at SalaciousSound.com. The title track of her latest album, Circus, has also received some love from remixers around the world all with their own unique treatment of the title track.

Aoki and JFK move the 905!

Steve Aoki was in Burlington Ontario last night. For those of you who have no idea where Burlington is, I don’t blame you. For those of you who do, I am sure you are asking yourselves, “since when do big Electro DJs take over Burlington?” Last night Steve Aoki brought the 416 to the 905 to shut down Zu Bar, a club just off the QEW.

The night opened up with Toronto’s Vivi Diamond warming the crowd up on the 1s and 2s. Dropping in and out of hard electro she got everyone’s temperature ready for the headliner. When I hopped on the Go train to get out to the burbs for the show I was excited to see the man behind Dim Mak kill the crowd with hard basslines and wild theatrics, what i didn’t expect was for him to have St. Mandrew, AutoErotique’s Keith Lite, and MSTRKRFT’s JFK in tow! Unfortunately not everyone in the audience knew what they were baring witness too. I on the other hand paid to see Aoki and was blessed with the opportunity to see him beside one of Toronto’s best acts, JFK, in one of Toronto’s smaller suburbs.

The combination of having Steve Aoki and JFK beside one another in the booth was purely electric. These two artists together made for one of the filthiest sets I’ve ever heard. Opening with The Bloody Beetroots Cornelius was epic! Some of you may recall that this track inspired me to put up a little post on the evolution of DJs into modern Rock Stars. This concert affirmed my every belief. With Aoki standing on top of the DJ booth screaming into the mic, JFK pounding a bottle of crown, the lights blazing and the music raging, seeing Aoki dive into the crowd put this culture into perspective for me.

Great DJs aren’t just playing music, they play the crowd. I remember hearing about how Larry Lavan used toÂ control a crowd at Paradise Garage. He would make the crowd move the way he wanted them to. If he wanted them to go down, they did. When he wanted them to come up, they followed his lead. Aoki and JFK did just that. They changed the pace at various times, but there were a few distinct moments for me. In the beginning there was house, by dropping dirty electro they had to crowd flowing. Later in the night they created a mosh pit, after they dropped Rage’s Killing in the Name Of I was moshing with bros in blazers and dudes in dress shoes. Everyone in the crowd was being moved by these masters of musical manipulation. If they let the track cut out for a second or two, it only increased the intensity with which the crowd responded to the drop. House is all about peaks and valleys, these guys took you bungee jumping. Unexpected drops were welcome, and buildups took you to the top of the mountain.

Steve Aoki is the best DJ I have ever seen PERFORM. I couldn’t really argue that he is the best at beatmatching, mixing, and effecting; but I will argue that he is the best showman I have ever seen on a set of decks.

DJs are the New Rockstars

Over the last month everyone has been talking about the trailer for Justice’s Across the Universe. Over the next little while everyone will be talking about this video by the Bloody Beetroots. The video was released to build hype over their much anticipated Cornelius EP, which drops later this month. Though others may have suggested this video is nothing more than a rip off of the aforementioned Justice trailer, the fact that they may be right is irrelevant. These short vignettes into the lives of some of today’s biggest electronic superstars go to show that electronic music is no longer just dance music, it’s music to mosh to. Artists such as The Bloody Beetroots, Crookers, Justice etc. are no longer playing shows for people to rave to, they are playing shows that people rock to. A lot of the biggest acts in electronic musicÂ are making the transition from funky and smooth to driving and distorted.Â The same way rock started out swinging with Chuck Berry and ended up headbanging to AC/DC; house music may have found its inspiration at the Paradise Garage, but these artists could indicate a a move towards Ozzfest.

The last big Electro show I attendedÂ (Crookers @ Circa in Toronto) involved crowd surfing, modified moshing, and other acts generally reserved for stadiums, pyrotechnics, and heavily distorted Marshall amplifiers. As Electro continues to get harder and faster, this movement is quickly changing my perception of house music DJs. Drunk and Drugged may have always been a part of the protocol, but what’s new, appears to be the way DJs feed off of the crowd.Â Whether its Steve Aoki pouring out two bottles of Grey Goose over admirers in London Ontario, thinking a riot could break out at any moment after the Justice show this past March in Toronto, or lifting a DJ through the crowd as he casually lets the record play; these phenomena go to show that the DJ is no longer the man behind the scenes but the scene itself.

Discotech are possibly the best remixers floating around the web these days. They have been killing it track after track, and if you didn’t know now you know. The above video is possibly the coolest remix I’ve heard this year. Maybe not the best, but theÂ Bill O’Reilly’s freak out sample is epic, making for an extremely intense song.Â I have yet to hear something by these artists that i do not like. One of Crooklyn Clan’s best sellers, their mixes have become a necessity for todays biggest and smallest DJs. I only look foward to hearing more from this group in the new year!

More Michael Jackson, More Deadmau5, More Remix

Since I’ve already told you who Deadmau5 is…and I hope you already know enough about Micheal Jackson that I don’t really need to talk about him…I’m going to skip straight to the music! 4 Tracks I came accross. All awesome. All Remixes.

The first is the Bootylicious remix of the hit track Attention Whore by Deadmau5 and Mellefresh, although not quite your so vain, the track is banging nevertheless! The next is a G.reg Bootleg mashup of Smooth Criminal and Ghosts N’ Stuff. The songs work really well together, this is a definate banger! Deadmau5 remixed Jump Around, great track to remix in my opinion, gave it an electro feel, but he made sure to let the song drop in its natural form for part of the track. The last mashup is pretty rediculous. If you want intensity, take Busta Rhymes and Jello, drop them with some Deadmau5 and you have The Reward is Dangerous. Dangerous is one of my favorite popular hip hop tracks, the beat infects your body and makes it move. BussaBust was the shit, his flow was serious and made me delirious, so check a couple of Busta videos bellow and let me know what you think.

Lady Gaga was at CiRCA here in Toronto on Sunday. Honestly, I couldn’t have cared less. Regardless, I have decided to post a collection of remixes of Lady Gaga’s Poker Face. Lady Gaga isn’t that awesome, but she is very remixable. Monday Mixdown – DJ Cozmic Cat

Hi All,

Looks like the Panic Mechanics are cooking up something spicy for next Monday. In the meantime here is a mix for Monday I came accross. DJ Cozmic Cat has spent time spinning in Philly and NY, she now calls Toronto home. From Wrongbar in Parkdale to Voglie in the Village this female DJ is all over the Toronto Scene. The easiest place to find her is probably Andy Poolhall. With a weekly spot called Eights and Nines on Thursdays, she also spins two monthly including the last Friday of the month for Synchro and the legendary lesbian Cherry Bomb on the second last Saturday of the month. This is where I first met Cozmic Cat and honestly I have developed a lot of respect for this DJ. I appreciated the fact that she went of her way to e-mail me a song I heard in one of her sets @ Andy and recognize how hard she is working – she plays multiple gigs accross the city a week. Make sure you check her out!

Three House Remixes of Three Pop Divas

I’m back at it again! Here are a couple of remixes that I want to share for a while with readers. The first is a remix of So What by Pink, its by Player and Remady. This song samples elements of the original rather than just changing the beat. The track doesn’t use Pink’s vocals too much as far as a chorus is concerned. Her voice is sampled in buildups that ultimately end with a drop into a nice electro groove. On the other hand, Maurice Joshua’s Club mix of Beyonce’s banger Single Ladies is centered around the vocals. He cuts up the vocals a bit and drops it over a really fun house vibe with awesome drums. This Bimbo Jones remix of Christina Aguilera’s Keeps Gettin’ Better is pretty dope. Dj Cal? has been playing it repetitively and I’m still not sick of it. This track has become the archetype to which I compare every other version of the song, even the original.
