Editors note: Nicholas Firan provided photos of the night – you can view them in full quality here.

I consider myself very lucky to have seen Designer Drugs tear up Webster Hall in New York City twice this year, both times having left with fond memories and ears ringing. With that in mind I had been looking forward to this show for a few weeks now, and judging from the length of the line out front early in the night, many others had as well. As the venue began to fill DVAS, from Montreal, helped warm up the crowd with a short but energetic set.

Michael Vincent Patrick, one half of New York City based Designer Drugs, started things off with a heavyweight track, their latest single Drop Down. To be honest I’m not really sure how long the set went on, because like they say, time flies when you’re having fun.

And fun is exactly what everyone was having. Sweat and raised hands is all I could see across the sea of people right to the very back. The energy in the place was so thick that even Mike couldn’t help but leave his post behind the turn tables a few times to go shake a few hands in the front row, and later to surf the crowd.

As his time on stage wound down, Mike dropped Baptism from local artists Crystal Castles, and again the crowd responded with a burst of energy that rivaled the outpour at the beginning of the night.

With a seamless transition suddenly Ash and Chris aka the Tape Deck Bros. were on stage keeping the party going. It was at this point that the people were finally able to get on stage and enjoy the party first hand. And with that the party kept going on until the early hours in the morning.

That was one hell of a Friday the 13th!

A year ago I wrote an article about four producers with over a decade of experience in the music industry coming together to form The Angry Kids. Beckstein (Jeff Beck), Tom Da Bomb (Tommy Causevski) and ry2K (Ryan Wilock) have worked in production, engineering, and the group is currently signed to deals with labels across the globe. A year ago versions of their song have poked up on various forums on the web. When I contacted ry2K about posting his hot new track on our site he was apprehensive. After checking out the site he not only agreed to allow us an exclusive post of the song in its Ultimix form, but to answer some questions on the industry he loves and the city he is from. The have since produced numerous new songs that you can check out on their MySpace. They are plaing Arcade Fridays at Mod Club tonight before they take off to Miami for WMC.

Check out the interview here

Yes yes y’all. I hope that the majority of you folks took ALL weekend to recover from Thursday night. If you don’t know what I’m talking about, shame on you.

Answer: Fool’s Gold/Trouble and Bass.

Mod Club was the place to BE.

I never knew people who made family- fun automobiles, SCION, could also be really great at bringing a grimey party to Mod, and a free one at that. The party was a super cool mix of the young cats, white-collars, flashing lights, and bubbles. Yep. Bubbles.

The night opened with Nacho Lovers, Andrew Ross and Scott Seawhale who kicked it off by playing some cooled-out Detroit techno that got hips moving the minute people stepped into the room. Bodies went from walking to bouncing immediately, I know mine did.

This Dj duo’s set started the event off on the right (dancing) foot assembling hype for the rest of the acts to follow.

Breaking in with smooth transition, AC Slater stepped in next, and turned up the heat. You know that heart-pounding bass you feel that immediately make your knees feel like Jello? Yeah, that. When he dropped Calm Down, the entire crowd moved in unison to the drops of bass that made the entire room feel like it was in waves.

The venue was a packed house by this point and as always it was really great to see a lot of support from familiar faces.

As more bodies flooded the dance-floor, Drop The Lime followed and held the crowd’s attention. This was my first time seeing Luca Venezia on the decks and he reminded me a lot of Perry Ferrell (circa Decadence 2009) when he was singing the vocals to his own tracks. Within seconds of The Devil’s Eyes intensifying through the speakers, a large crowd of girls drew to the front of the stage. Venezia towered over them, mic in hand, bubbles falling from above, powerfully grasping the hearts of us all.

To bring the party to a close, Jokers Of The Scene took control of the stage and proved time- and- time again just how gripping their sets are. They build up the dance-floor with infectious tweaks and peaks of sound and just when we cant take it anymore, they crush our skulls with creeping bass.

Mod Club was bursting at the seams from start to finish, a heartwarming sight to see on a cold February night in the city of Toronto.

Overall, Scion Canada gets an “A” in partying.

Love,

Natalie Di.

PS. Based on my observations as stated above, I’d say that the chances of Scion going on to throw themselves an annual head-office -electro- party, is 100%. Casual Friday’s now include party shades.

PPS. Catch NACHO LOVERS, BRANDON SEK, MARK MENY, and undeadisco’s own PAUL REVERED at WRONGBAR this FRIDAY FEBRUARY 19! for DEEPER

Toddla T’s first time taking the big stage in Toronto. While everyone was reved up for Rusko, Toddla showed us why I love him. Playing amazing cuts and great chunes he set the stage for Rusko to provide the shit you knew you were going to hear. What you might not have expected was the crowd to sing the melody to Jahova… peep the video. Shits fucking bomb and the reason why I love music, I love shows, and I am excited for the future of this genre and this party.

Laidback Luke @ Arcade Fridays
One of the best DJs I’ve seen grace the stage, Luke’s talent on the decks surpases a lot of names of equal stature. The dopest thing about Luke is he knows how to get the crowd into without being obnoxious. Killer set. Killer night. Couldn’t be more proud to have been a part of it.

K’naan is about to become a household name. All you need to do is check out Troubadour and you’ll see why. Born in Mogadishu, Somalia (considered the world’s most dangerous city), K’naan grew up in destitution, bloodshed and civil war. In ’91, at the age of 13, he managed to escape with his mother to NYC and eventually settled in Toronto. 10 years later he’s learns English and is making music; he releases The Dusty Foot Philosopher in 2005. Come 2008, he’s in Bob Marley’s house in Kingston with Damian and Mos recording Troubadour.

Dusty is so fresh in a rap genre that has been too stale as of late. He’s returning artistic merit to Hip-Hop with profound lyricism. His songs tell stories, carry messages, and have meaning. He’s poetic.
I saw him Tuesday night at Mod Club in Toronto for his album release concert – the dude starts all his tracks acapella, then gets his live band to kick in. S’no wonder he’s down with Mos and Talib nowadays, both love spittin over live tracks (I wouldn’t be surprised if these guys all team up and throw something together at BAM in nyc, maybe even an album down the road). What’s crazy is that K’naan’s sound is catchy enough to compete with mainstream anthem rap; he’s got at least 5 radio-friendly singles on Troubadour. Could this be the guy who returns legitimacy to mainstream hiphop??

More on the album. “Take a Minute” and “Wavin Flag” are probably my two favorite tracks. “If Rap Gets Jealous” on Troubadour features the Metalica guitarist Hammett, but is definitely suffers from overproduction and a guitar solo that is about 2 minutes too long (K’naan’s original version of his song on his first album is better). There really isn’t a weak song on the album. Damian’s feat. on “I Come Prepared” is tight. Mos comes out okay in “America,” but does a lot more with his name next to the track than his actual performance in it. Listen to Dusty’s words. He was big in his concert on telling people to really listen and identify with his tracks.

Big ups to K’naan – couldn’t think of a better artist who deserves some success.
