Tomorrowland Official After Movie

This captivating short film shot at Tomorrowland 2012 is probably the best produced edm concert video I have ever seen. It helps that the Belgian locale draws an international crowd of extremely attractive people, and the visual production, the fireworks, the staging, the live art and entertainment, and all the other incredible details are of incredible scale.

By rights, this looks to be nearly twice as big as EDC (with 180,000 festival goers over three days, as opposed to just over 200k total), and while the scope of production doesn’t differ greatly, the scale has an impressive effect.

Birdbath – Toronto’s hottest weekly pool party

Every Saturday this summer, Toronto’s Polson Pier plays host to a vibe and party inspired by the beaches and pools of Miami and Ibiza. The site features plenty of deck, sun chair, and cabana space, a world-class view of downtown Toronto, drinks, and a musical groove that is funk heavy, and perfectly complements mojitos and sunshine.

To get an idea of the two editions already passed, the folks at Birdbath have put together a helpful video for those who are wondering if they might enjoy an afternoon in the sun with their friends down at the Polson pool.

I’ve included a recent mix by a personal favourite, Goldroom, to give you an idea of what to expect from me when I play the party on August 11th.

Melanie Fiona makes surprise appearance during Wale performance [HD concert video]

Almost two weeks ago now we photographed and reviewed a secret concert held in a former train garage, which featured the musical stylings of Wale, Melanie Fiona, Santigold, and DJ Maseo of De La Soul.

Well, at long last, the exclusive + high quality video content from the night is available for those looking to re-live some of the night’s highlights, and those who weren’t fortunate enough to attend.

My personal favourite is the video above, and is without a doubt the most exciting moment of the evening. The video stars Wale and Melanie Fiona performing their collaborative effort ‘Beautiful Bliss’. The Fader couldn’t have said it better: Melanie Fiona absolutely owns it on stage “channeling a young Mary J. Blige”, while Wale delivers his usual smooth vocal performance and hypes the crowd in to a frenzy.

Memorecks is a live performance artist and producer who we recently covered in a 14+ minute ‘in the studio’ feature, in which he literally creates two songs from scratch using sounds we completely surprised him with. You can check that out here.

If one thing is obvious from that feature – or any of Memorecks’ many videos on his YouTube channel – it’s that this guy has serious talent. It was no surprise when we learned he’d be supporting Zeds Dead, Omar LinX, and a cast of other great musicians on ZD’s Living Dead Tour.

This is a live jam using an MPC1000 for the samples and drums, Moog Animoog on the iPad3 for the bass sounds, and Ivory2 VST for the piano in Ableton Live.

MUTEK Festival 2012 [preview]

Forget WEMF, Electric Daisy, and Shambahla…Montreal’s annual MUTEK Festival is the place to be for die-hard electronic music fans. In a span of only five days, MUTEK showcases some of the best electronic artists from Canada and all over the globe. Notable additions to this year’s festival are rising house producers Nicolas Jaar and Deniz Kurtel along with veteran sound experimenters Keith Fullerton Whitman and Lustmord.

A self-proclaimed “international rendezvous for original and avant-garde programming”, MUTEK is certainly not your typical music festival. With the exception of Sunday’s MUTEK PIKNIC, all of the performances are held at unique indoor venues throughout Montreal. This year, a ten-screen installation lab site for panoramic performance know as the ‘CineChamber’ will make its North American debut at the festival. Furthermore, the Quartier des spectacles has been transformed into an “open-air laboratory for the digital arts, with the façades of eight major locations being transformed into canvases for the work of multiple visual artists”.

A specialized combination of rare art, music, and technology is what makes MUTEK stand out amongst other electronic music festivals. The ‘MU’ in MUTEK stands for mutation, a perfect descriptor of the festival’s yearly advancements and transformations. For those of you attending this year’s festival, (or those that are simply curious) I have compiled a list of the top ten must-see acts with two for each day. Full steam ahead!

Wednesday, May 30

NOCTURNE 1: Blondes @ the SAT - Metropolis, 10pm

“Blondes craft enveloping, cosmically smooth melodies, born out of a shrewd mélange of synthesizers, sequencers, and other drum machines. Founding members Zach Steinman and Sam Haar met while studying electroacoustic composition in school, but they officialised their duo during a trip to Berlin, and their music project began taking off upon their return to Brooklyn. Since releasing their first EP, Touched, on Merok Records, they’ve refined their sound through the release of a trilogy for New York label RVNG. Inspired by their personal experiences, they explore the concept of duality through a number of track pairings: Lover/Hater, Business/Pleasure, and Wine/Water. For their debut album, they added Gold/Amber to their ever-growing list of dichotomies.”

A/VISIONS 1: Biosphere & Lustmord present TRINITY @ Monument-National, 8pm

“Two of the world’s most inventive orchestra conductors – both working with custom-built instruments and hybrid performers – come together on the MUTEK stage for a singular performance they call Electronic Folkways. France’s Pierre Bastien has built an entire private orchestra made out of Meccano robots, outfitted with traditional music instruments or, on occasion, everyday objects. He records albums and gives concerts with these machines, known collectively as ‘Mecanium’. Bastien, who performed at MUTEK in 2006, returns to the festival this year with his orchestra of hybrid, part-digital, part-analog instruments devised by Norway’s Espen Sommer Eide (Alog, Phonophani). An Oslo-born multi-instrumentalist, Eide has developed the Concertinome project – a custom-made instrument combining the concertina accordion with the monomer style keyboard – which he’s presented at Europe’s most prestigious concert halls and venues. Recording for Biophon Records (run by Biosphere, also performing this year), Eide has released a number of records as Phonomani, while also collaborating with noise-guitarist Dag-Are Haugan as part of the ALOG duo.”

NOCTURNE 2: Shackleton @ the SAT – Metropolis, 10pm

“[CANADIAN DEBUT]Shackleton belongs to the community of dubsteppers that emerged out of London’s FWD>> Club, where many say the scene first began. But Shackleton is a unique dubstepper in that he draws on his intimate knowledge of African culture to shape his music. His tracks are remarkable for their minimal, often industrial-leaning approach to dub aesthetics, qualities which have opened his work to minimal techno masterminds like Ricardo Villalobos, who began dropping Shackleton tracks into his DJ sets last year and recently remixed Blood On Your Hands into an 18-minute minimal epic. Shackleton began releasing singles in 2004 and quickly moved on to start his own label, Skull Disco, which draws its name from the rituals of a tribe in Cameroon. After a half-dozen singles on Skull Disco, Shackleton has gained a reputation for reactionary politics and a morbid sense of humour (track titles include Soundboy’s Nuts Get Ground Up Proper, I Want to Eat You, Hamas Rules, Soundboy’s Ashes Get Chopped Up and Snorted, etc), as well as their compulsive beatscapes.”

NOCTURNE 2: Shlohmo @ Red Bull Music Academy Stage – SAT, 10pm

“Henry Laufer, better known by his Shlohmo moniker, is a young Los Angeles-based artist whose star has been rapidly ascending thanks to the release of his record Bad Vibes (2011) on Friends of Friends. Gravitating to the same mystical realms initiated by Flying Lotus, Shlohmo produces unsettled emotional soundscapes of abstract hip-hop and trip-hop. His latest effort, Vacation EP, continues to develop on his splintered musical template while casting a more polished, less distorted light on the future. To mark the EP’s release, Shlohmo got the remix treatment courtesy of Nicolas Jaar, Teebs, and Airhead, among others. MUTEK is proud to welcome him to the festival for the first time.”

Friday, June 1

NOCTURNE 3: Deniz Kurtel @ the SAT – Metropolis, 10pm

“Multidisciplinary artist Deniz Kurtel has been cultivating her penchant for electronic sonorities since her school days. Presented as part of the Wolf+Lamb Experience Tour, as well as at Burning Man and Communikey, her impressive computer-programmed, LED light sculptures allowed her to quickly establish herself in New York’s experimental art scene. Music-wise, she produces deep, hypnotic, refined house cuts, largely inspired by her association with Wolf+Lamb. After drawing the attention of Damian Lazarus, her first record Music Watching Over Me was released on Crosstown Rebels in March 2011. One month later, her mug graced the cover of DJ Mag with the caption “the new queen of house”.

NOCTURNE 3: Nicolas Jaar @ the SAT – Metropolis, 10pm

“Since his first visit to MUTEK in 2009, Nicolas Jaar has met with resounding success on the international stage. Born in New York but of Chilean heritage, Nicolas Jaar was brought up between Soho and Santiago, where he played his first scales on the piano. At 17 years old, he released his first tracks on Wolf + Lamb, Circus Company and finally, on his own label, Clown and Sunset. He quickly garnered praise for the sensitivity and refinement of his output. In 2011, he issued his Space Is Only Noise, his widely acclaimed debut album, a work that relishes in a slow-moving journey to navigate some troubled waters. The record delivers on dreamy, melancholy melodies akin to Erik Satie and turn-of-the-century electronic poetry. Since then, the young artist’s musical maturity has made headways around the world. MUTEK has welcomed Nicolas Jaar more than once, in Montreal, Chile, and Spain. This year, he comes to us with full band to present a live performance.”

A/VISIONS 4: Tim Hecker & Stephen O’Malley @ St. James Church, 8pm

“For MUTEK 2012, Montreal ambient producer Tim Hecker himself reached out to programmers to suggest an unprecedented performance with guitarist Stephen O’Malley, of mythical band Sunn O))), using the organ at St-James United Church, a monument in the heart of downtown Montreal. These leading lights of sonic architecture will each perform independently, meeting along the way for improvisational passages as a duo. A festival favourite, Hecker currently stands at the forefront of ambient and experimental music, his international renown having grown steadily over the years. Beginning in 1996 under the Jetone moniker, early on he moved to working on increasingly complex compositions under his own name, melding dissonance, noise, and melody into a unique signature. He has released many albums on the Substractif, Mille Plateaux, Alien8 and Kranky labels. The latest, Ravedeath, 1972, released last year, is nominated for a Juno Award in the Electronic Album of the Year category.”

NOCTURNE 4: Keith Fullerton Whitman @ the Satosphere, Metropolis, 10pm

“Boston-based producer Keith Fullerton Whitman has spent the past two decades exploring the many faces of electronic composition, often delving fearlessly back as far as the mid-20th century to find inspiration in the likes of Karlhein Stockhausen, Steve Reich, and other pioneers of the genre. He began his production career as Hrvatski, focussing on the breakcore and drill n’ bass ends of the spectrum, but by the early 2000’s his music had grown significantly quieter and more disciplined. 2005 album Multiples, his third for American label Kranky was heralded as a high watermark for its incorporation of academic precision and haunting instrumentation, and ever since Whitman’s reputation has continued to grow with releases on Kranky, Carpark, Digitalis, and Editions Mego. Generators, his latest album, was released earlier this year on Editions Mego. He runs the Mimaroglu Music Sales boutique, the Entschuldigen label, and the Reckankomplex studio. For MUTEK, he’ll perform a multi-channel piece for modular synthesizer incorporating analogue video feedback.”

MUTEK//PIKNIC: Valentin Stip @ Parc Jean-Drapeau, 2pm

“A trained pianist who grew up playing Rachmaninov and Mozart, Valentin Stip was recently turned on to the compositional possibilities of computers, and in doing so, to electronic music. Having moved to Montreal two years ago, he signed his first EP, Anytime Will Do, in spring 2011 on Nicolas Jaar’s imprint Clown & Sunset. His musical output doesn’t rush to the finish line, embracing space while crafting woolly atmospheres. After a summer tour that will take him to New York, London, and Berlin, he’ll premiere his latest collaborative project later this year.”

MUTEK//PIKNIC: Wolf + Lamb @ Parc Jean-Drapeau, 2pm

“Wearing an assortment of hats comes easy to Zev Eisenberg and Gadi Mizrahi: label heads, producers, DJs, and party promoters operating under the Wolf+Lamb banner. Since making a name for themselves with their legendary underground bashes at New York’s Marcy Hotel, the duo has opened a club, begun producing their own sultry house grooves, and founded their acclaimed leftfield imprint, easily one of the most buzzed-about labels in the electronic arena. Part of a new generation of exciting, in-demand American producers, their W+L stable of artists (Deniz Kurtel, Nicolas Jaar, Soul Clap, Tanner Ross) churns out an uninterrupted stream of forward-thinking house, techno, and disco gems, while the label maestros pack up their funky, wandering bass lines to headline events around the globe.”

M83 @ The Sound Academy 05.06.2012 [show review]

My recollection of M83‘s sold-out performance at the Sound Academy this past Sunday is somewhat of a hazy blur, thanks in part to a wisdom teeth operation I underwent the day after. Admittedly, I can’t remember much of what happened yesterday (other than drinking half of a chocloate milkshake from McDonald’s) however, I couldn’t possibly forget the euphoric rush that surged through my body as Anthony Gonzalez and co. dove into the sublime opener “Intro”. Although Zola Jesus was not present to deliver her howling vocals, Morgan Kibby (whom also has a fantastic solo project called White Sea) astounded with her flawless rendition of Zola‘s eerie croons. For a minute there, I was convinced that Zola in fact, had made a guest appearance.

After the rousing ‘Intro’, the euro synth-poppers didn’t waste any time, immediately launching into their enchanting classic “Teen Angst”. As soon as those arpeggiated synth tones hit my eardrums, I was overcome by a wave of nostalgia. M83‘s music has a very wistful and nostalgic feel to begin with but every time I hear “Teen Angst” or for that matter, anything off of “Dead Cities, Red Seas & Lost Ghosts” my thoughts instantly harken back to March of 2010, where I’m staring out of a bus window at the Autobahn highway, snow lightly falling, and nothing but M83 echoing through my headphones. There’s just something about their gauzy, dream-like sound that really strikes me emotionally. I just can’t help but swoon over the heartfelt sincerity of Gonzalez’s lyrics mixed with his exultant synths, the cascading guitar riffs of Jordan Lawlor, Kibby’s gorgeous incantations and Loïc Maurin’s reverberating percussion. To see them live was truly a revelatory experience.

The only thing that I found disappointing about this show was its runtime. M83 blasted through their set in just about an hour (including the encore). It really was quite a condensed show with the opener, Swedish M83 sound-alikes I Break Horses playing for only about half an hour and M83 themselves playing from about 10:00 to 11:15. However, I didn’t mind it too much considering that they managed to concentrate the majority of their crowd-pleasers into just one hour. They played basically everything I was hoping they would from “Graveyard Girl” to “Steve McQueen” to “Skin of the Night”. The only songs I thought they snubbed were “Unrecorded” off of 2003′s “Dead Cities, Red Seas & Lost Ghosts” and “Kim & Jessie” but overall, their set-list was quite satisfying.

What really astonished me about M83 was their versatility. Gonzalez, being the musical mastermind that he is, effortlessly transitioned from bass, to guitar, to synths, and back to bass, all the while cooing breathy lullabies. Morgan Kibby manned keyboard and synths while belting gorgeous vocals and whoa-oh-oh’s. Lawlor played his part impeccably, thrashing about with his curly mop of hair and black skinny’s stopping only to pummel the drum machine now and then . Being a drummer myself, I was thoroughly impressed with Loïc Maurin’s spot-on fills and downright thunderous beats. Live, M83‘s sound is very tight and a number of the songs they played (“Reunion”,”Wait”, “Midnight City”) sounded almost exactly the same as the studio recordings. This proved to me that M83 are technically skilled musicians but what I really wanted to hear was some variation. Sure enough, on “We Own the Sky” Maurin threw in a new drum beat and they added an atmospheric segue into “Steve McQueen”. Sure, it wasn’t total improvisation but it showed that M83 are capable of manipulating their sound in a live setting.

As expected, the song that sent the crowd into a frenzy was hit single “Midnight City”. If you weren’t there, you can watch the mediocre quality fan-shot video above. It was certainly one of the highlights of the night but I was surprised that they didn’t save it for the encore. In any case, I was actually glad that they didn’t; instead they happened to play two of my favourite tracks off of “Saturdays = Youth” for the encore: “Skin of the Night” and “Couleurs”. ”Skin of the Night’s” spacey drum pads and seraphic vocals of Gonzalez and Kibby enveloped the crowd in a meditative reverie before propelling into the rapturous 8 and a half minute dance number “Couleurs”. Almost entirely instrumental and one of M83‘s clubbier tracks, “Couleurs” was a perfect song to cap the night off. Swaying and nodding along to the four-on-the floor beat, flaring guitar, and star-like synths, I felt as if I was drifting off into a narcotic haze. Hmmm…sounds familiar.

John Roman set to release Reclusion 2

“Reclusion 2” is the second installment in John Roman’s infamous mix series of unreleased material. Although unlike the first, “Reclusion 2” features no remixes, no bootlegs and no edits – instead 8 new original tracks.

Inspired by and as a product of his solitary and obsessive work habit, the Reclusion series is an insight into Roman’s process and evolution as a producer. Sounds ranging from tribal to techno to UK funky to footwork, “Reclusion 2” is rarely ever one genre, but always unmistakably John Roman.

It has been amazing to see the evolution of John Roman’s career first hand. We were one of the first places to post his Heads Will Roll remix. From there he has evolved with a sharp musical acumen while developing into a worldly and multidimensional electronic musician who is well respected by his peers.

The mixtape will be released next Wednesday. You can catch Roman in Toronto on Friday night at Course of Time, our good friend Mr. Charlton’s monthly showcase and residency. Roman is amongst good company as this monthly event has played host to top tier talent including Rynecologist, Dinamo Azari, Thomas Von Party, and Bordello.

Loud All Night recap video ft. Northend, AutoErotique, Chris Lake, & Michael Woods

Last month Toronto production team Provoke launched a series called Loud All Night, with its first installment starring a collection of talented, young, local producers supporting AutoErotique, Chris Lake, & Michael Woods.

First in the supporting cast was Northend, one of Provoke’s cast of hot up-and-comers, who opened up the main stage. I was especially stoked on his performance because he had several new original tracks to drop that night, and they sounded incredible on that big system. Also supporting were Dzeko & Torres, Jed Harper, Gabe Galluci, Damn Kids, Kurtbradd, Status Brown, and yours truly.

Provoke had a serious production team on hand that night to record the goings-on, and the results (above) are as impressive as the crowd and performances were. The footage really captures the energy and excitement that filled the Sound Academy that night.

You can bet we’ll be following Provoke closely this year. They’re producing world-class shows, supporting amazing local talent, and their attention to the details + forward-looking content creation efforts put them in the highest echelon of quality show producers/curators. It’s content like this video, photo gallery, and the DJ sets that they regularly record and release, in coordination with some of the biggest names in dance music I might add, set them apart from the pack.

Northend is getting ready to release several tracks over the coming months, and also head out on the road. Back in January Jay Lumen visited Ontario for two dates in Toronto and London. His performance at Maison in Toronto boasted a packed house, great visuals, and of course highly-curated track selection.

The club is a premier venue in Toronto with one of the best soundsystems in the city, and one of the most exciting Saturday parties with their highly-curated Extravaganza tech and house lineups.

We spent the night filming action around the club, and came up with this great accompaniment to one of Jay’s recent tracks ‘The Drummer’. Thanks to Provoke, we also are able to share with you his mix from the evening in which he debuted a new track of his and played an impressive collection of bootlegs and remixes.

AM Only + WeSC [SXSW2012] showcase video feature, starring Knife Party, Skrillex + 12th Planet, Zeds Dead, Codes + more!

By far the most packed, wild, + loud showcase I had the pleasure of attending during SXSW2012 was the AM Only + WeSC showcase.

Despite the fact that I was on an artist’s personal list it was actually a miracle that I was able to get in – three snarling lines each over a city block long and five persons deep choked the streets outside, as the strongly electro-influenced tunes played by their composers filled Austin’s warm night air.

It made Skrillex’ comments during his performance all the more special, and goes to show just how classy a dude Sonny Moore is.

This video from Sonny Moore, aka Skrillex’, performance at Ultra 2012 shows just how brilliant and creative his production team is.

Team Skrillex has been picking up all of the best talent in design, photography, lighting, production, (etc) for the last year – a year in which he performed over 300 shows – so to see them flexing that creative muscle at Ultra and pushing the mothership concept forward was pretty cool.

My feelings about the set are warm, to say the least.. the drum and bass tempo is hype, and the dub influence is pretty consistent throughout. When I first heard the Full Flex version of Ruffneck, I knew it was my favourite (and the best track off the EP) because it was so heavily dub-influenced. Glad to see him incorporating more of that sound in his work!!

Miami Music Week and Ultra are in full swing today, and one of the more promising pool parties is broadcasting live on be-at.tv. I just watched Jamies Zabiela’s highly technical set, and it is great if you’re in to DJ gear.

In it he uses the new Pioneer RMX-1000, a Korg Kaossilator, and his custom iPad touch OSC app.

12th Planet, Flinch, & Crizzly tour video feature, shot by Salacious Sound

12th Planet, Flinch, and Crizzly were in Toronto just a few short weeks ago, and we managed to squeeze in to the packed house in order to shoot a video feature on some of our favourite dubstep artists.

The song backing the video is a collaboration between 12th Planet and Flinch, off a free EP that Scion A/V dropped last month called ‘The End is Near!’

SBTRKT and Sampha perform ‘Hold On’ live at 6 Music’s 10th birthday celebration

Throughout the month of March, BBC Radio 6 Music are celebrating 10 years of broadcasting, with live performances from a range of artists including De La Soul and Orbital.

Yesterday a live performance starring SBTRKT and Sampha was released online. The two perform their collaboration live, using a range of instruments, samplers, looping, and effects racks for a packed house at the BBC’s Maida Vale studios.

Watching this video is a reminder that, as much as the DJ has become a superstar, that there is always going to be a place for musicians with live performance skills. Sampha’s lovely voice floats above the mix that they craft expertly, and on the fly. It’s the live percussion that really gives the performance its signature feel however. What’s interesting is it doesn’t feel significantly “live-er” than his recordings – a testament to his performance abilities and the swing inherent in the recorded works.

Holy Ship! short film released

The three day floating-rave HOLY SHIP! just released an official recap video of their maiden voyage through the Bahamas.

Line-up highlights include Rusko, Diplo, Buraka Som Sistema, Gessafelstein, Brodinski, Fatboy Slim, A-Trak, and Skrillex.

Watch Memorecks making two MPC songs live, using surprise samples [video documentary]

Several weeks ago I headed up to a desolate and remote suburb of the Greater Toronto Area to film a documentary on one of the hottest rising talents in 2012: James Peck, aka Memorecks. We showed up with two movie soundtracks – 2001, a Space Odyssey and Close Encounters of the Third Kind – on a USB drive, without having told Memorecks what we’d brought him, and filmed him making two beats.

Suffice it to say, the results are nothing short of amazing. To pull off a stunt like this you need more than just technical skills with computer software and interface devices. What really shines through in this video is the fact that, although he is a nerdy/techy dude who happens to be extremely knowledgeable about his toys, he is also an incredibly talented musician.

After the first of two incredible, improvised, impromptu beats he makes you get a sneak-peek in to a very exciting bass-music project that he has been working on, and learn a bit about the man behind the MPC.

This documentary is the product of over 50 hours of hard work, so it would mean a LOT to us (and Memorecks) if you would rate, comment, subscribe, and share.

Peck has gained notoriety in the last two years on account of his talents with the MPC – a device which allows him to play and arrange samples on his computer. Imagine your mum’s piano, but you can assign whatever you like to each key – a drum noise, your dog barking, or a slice of a rap vocal.

Two years ago, when Peck decided to focus on instrumental hip-hop he began posting videos on his (now, extremely popular) Youtube channel of him making full arrangements – songs – live on his MPC. Suffice it to say, he captured a lot of peoples’ attention. Think

Now, a million video views on Memorecks is going to be venturing out of the studio in 2012, as he joins Zeds Dead, Omar Linx, Araabmuzik, Mat the Alien, and XI on a huge 80-date North American tour.
