Jacques Renault is one of the leading lights of the disco house scene in New York.

You might have remembered one of his first tracks exposed here on Salacious circa fall of 2010 with his super remix of “Beam Me Up” by Midnight Magic.

He comes from a very musical background, having started off learning classical music in Washington DC playing violin and the viola, adding trumpet and guitar into the fray in the teenage years.

The multi-instrumentalist moved to NYC in 2002. There he began establishing his network by scoping out the local record shops and spinning around town.

Jacques is currently working with DFA Records creating specialty remixes for labels from all over. Aside from that, he’s been focusing on more original tunes near the tail end of last year.

Watch out for this prolific producer in 2012!

Also check out On The Prowl, Jacques’ label in partnership with Marcos Cabral which has a more tech-house feel.

Crizzly, one of the most notable new guys of 2011 hits us with a new mixtape dubbed (ha ha ha “dub”) Crunkstep. His mastery of bass is impressive, and his crossover style raises the question “where will (the sound of) dubstep go?”

He demonstrates a keen sense of rhythm in his remix of Aj Hernz’s Snap Back Swag. The track’s pre-drop excitement level is dizzying, and the drop delivers fully and satisfyingly.

This new installment gives a taste of his previous work, while showcasing his growth as an artist and hinting at greater things to come! Stylistically, it’s hip-hop inspirations are evidence, and it is accompanied by an understanding of how a dubstep-style drop can really impact an audience!

Please take a listen and make sure to check his Soundcloud!!

One thing I love about music like this is that I can forget it’s dubstep, and be sent back to a time when I was metalhead. And lets be honest, Metal-heads and Dub-heads aren’t that different. We both have an undying love of our respective genres with a faith that is unshakable.

Crizzly has come along way from the first song I heard of his, and most importantly has kept what initially attracted my attention. This dude had it down when Willow Smith was still popular!

Yesterday, Alpha Pup Records dropped the second single from the debut album of intriguing electronic duo Virtual Boy. I can’t say that I’ve heard any buzz surrounding the album or Virtual Boy for that matter, so, I’ve taken it upon myself to put this “buzzwagon” in motion.

“Let Go” opens with a vocoder that is curiously reminiscent of James Blake’s sparse “Lindisfarne I” and segues into an electro-acoustic guitar loop. At 1:36 the track reaches its apex as the beat jolts in and all the elements of sound converge. A brief overlook of Virtual Boy’s biography will reveal to you that members Henry Allen and Preston Walker are classically trained musicians. This is really no surprise considering the precision and technicality of “Let Go”. Their sound owes as much to Bach and Mozart as it does to Ratatat and The Glitch Mob. (bio via wearevirtualboy.com)

Virtual Boy’s self-titled debut album drops on February 7. In the meantime, you can watch their groovy video for “Let Go”:

Some of the tail end releases in 2011 gave a fresh light to what 2012 was going to bring us. On December 12th, disco viking Jonas Rathsman released his first tropical-sounding release on French Express. Having made an impression with his first release "Love Is My Middle Name" on the French Express Vol. 2 compilation, they snapped him up for another deal. His retro disco-style certainly fits the bill.

Zetto Interveiw

ReySon
Who is Zetto, what is Zetto?
Zetto
Zetto is a project formed by an anonymous Canadian music producer, the first 5 songs were released 17 days ago and 1 just today! There are many releases scheduled over the next year. The music is free… Want to share it as far as possible and will always keep it that way. This project was formed from a strong passion for EDM and hopes to develop over the next year!
ReySon
What are you most afraid of in life?
Zetto
-Most afraid of the world ending in 2012… better get it in now.
-Flying…wing breaks…
-Snakes
They all had to be mentioned
ReySon
If you had to pick between immortality and being able to save the world, which would you pick?
Zetto
Well of course save the world but I’m not going to lie immortality sounds pretty tempting to me, but I’d be a pour soul if I said otherwise.
ReySon
Name one useful tip/trick of the trade that has served you well throughout your musical career.
Zetto
Well I started out playing in a school band not by choice when I was very young. From there I got very into the drums, then the guitar, and so on and so forth.
Shortly after this I have been glued to the EDM scene. The main thing I’ve kept through it all is just my taste and love for all sorts of music.

But the only thing that matters is to get a catchy melody and drop it!
ReySon
What came first, the chicken or the egg?
Zetto
The egg, of course. Lol

UPDATE: HUGE news exclusive for you: you’ll soon be lucky enough to support Memorecks in upcoming collaborative productions AND on tour with a Toronto dubstep institution, whose own productions are heavily influenced by their strong roots in hip-hop, and whom have been strong supporters of Toronto rap. The duo also happens to be personal favourites and close friends to SalaciousSound: Zeds Dead.

Meet James Peck, aka Memorecks; singularly what’s missing from hip-hop AND music performance (irrespective of genre), as well as a positive, well respected, and extremely knowledgeable contributor to the online music community.

Peck has been running a website for a couple years now, and in that time he’s released a series of helpful + high quality Ableton live tutorial videos, a collection of performance videos, and also a pair of recorded works: his Camcorder EP, and most recently an instrumentals album titled Downtime (both at the bottom of this article). He’s also been making sick hip-hop beats in a style nearly lost to the ages: “chopping up breaks, and diggin’ in to crates.”

Crates here is, of course, a simplification of the wide-sampleable-world at Memorecks’ disposal in this current hip-hop epoch. And his style may throw back in some places with the use of classic rap samples, but make no mistake, his music is the future. The sonic landscapes Memorecks builds are comprised by instrumental jazz, traditional Japanese, odd ambient/soundscape, and even harpsichord chops as much as they are from classic arcade and console video game sounds, 808s, and vintage-sounding synths. Its as though he sits nicely at the nexus where electro and hip-hop split off from each other over thirty years ago.

And that description, while accurate, belies the subtle yet most important note about Memorecks beats; the underlying rawness isn’t some kitschy plugin, and its not a technique he copied by watching a youtube video. Peck does it all live.

That’s right – the complex drum arrangements and layering you’re hearing, and even the effects are done live. Peck loads his samples in a program called Ableton live, and connects a MIDI drumpad to his laptop which allows him to plays his eclectic selection of sounds as though they were an instrument. Once he’s done that he can create songs on the fly, freestyling, switching between sets of samples, and he can also apply effects combinations which he sets up before a performance.

My absolute favourite track is Cartridge, off the Camcorder EP. It samples the greatest single player RPG (nerd alert) ever made on a console gaming system: Final Fantasy 7. Here’s the sample

And his outrageously good flip:

Memorecks - Cartridge (Original Mix).mp3

Or if you prefer, watch him do it live!

And another couple favourites of mine:

Memorecks - Dead Robots.mp3
Memorecks - Deepest.mp3

Now that you’re a believer, go support him on Facebook.

Thomas J. Rubeli, a.k.a. Aech_Rom, is a relatively unknown producer from Switzerland who makes beautiful and inspired electronic music. Although one might be inclined to label Aech_Rom as Drum & Bass or IDM, these labels are merely part of the equation when considering his genre.

It is difficult to place Aech_Rom’s music into one specific genre. His styles range from Glitch to Ambient, IDM, Breakbeat, Drum & Bass, Drill & Bass, Experimental, and even Chiptune. Certainly, Rubeli’s style is derived from similarly varied artists like Aphex Twin, Autechre, or Squarepusher but Rubeli does not blatantly mimic these artists.

No, in fact, he creates a unique atmosphere that surrounds his music and somehow captures both the serene and the chaotic. Rubeli’s take on a sound that could potentially sound dated or unoriginal is instead quite refreshing and modernized.

Aech_Rom’s latest release Llen Part 1: LN47 Arrival (out now for free download on Complex Sound Sagacity) gives sufficient proof that Rubeli has a seat reserved for him in ‘Electronica Heaven’…right next to Richard D.
Back in June, our very own DJ Cal posted the video for Dillon Francis and Diplo’s “Que! Que!”. Y’all remember this? The one with the dancing twelve year olds and the 90s-style clip art graphics. (If not, click here) Anyway, this hilariously outrageous video was directed by none other than LIL INTERNET! LIL INTERNET, formerly known as RedFoxx, is the pseudonym of the ALL CAPS-loving, cheap 90′s animation aficionado Julian ‘Haterskeeptalkinumakinmefamous’ Foxworth (as he’s known on Facebook). Foxworth’s days are spent working as the senior director and editor of the trendy website karmalooptv.com, but when the sun goes down he transforms into super DJ LIL INTERNET! LIL INTERNET makes music for the end of the world. His throbbing, coked-out club anthems are the perfect soundtrack to your wild 2012 apocalypse rave party. So, it makes perfect sense that LIL INTERNET samples Britney Spears’ “Til’ the World Ends” on his blissed-out track titled “BRITNEY SPEARS ILLUMINATI GLITCH”. The four tracks posted on LIL INTERNET’s soundcloud exhibit Foxworth’s affinity for 90′s rave culture, moombahthon riddims, and cocaine (listen to “DMXICO [MASTER]” and you will see what I mean). LIL INTERNET’s musical style follows in the same vein as fellow rave revivalists Pictureplane and Modern Witch. Foxworth’s personal aesthetic could be attributed to the whole “witch-house” genre but even so, LIL INTERNET stands alone. Here’s some words of wisdom from the man himself: “If we took all the gun powder out of every bullet and bomb we could have fireworks every night.” true dat LIL INTERNET…true dat. (quote via antennamag)

Sorrow’s forte is versatility. This guy (His name is Joe and he is from Birmingham, UK) can do dubstep, garage, deep garage, 4×4 garage, grime, 2-step, ambient, emotional piano music and any other dubby, minimalist sub-genres you want to throw in. His skittering, 2-step rhythms, melodic textures, and dark urban ambiance are derived from early UK garage innovators like MJ Cole, Todd Edwards, and Wookie. Sorrow’s style can also be attributed to the more recent UK garage phenom Burial. In fact, Sorrow did a remix of the track “Homeless” off of Burial’s 2007 breakthrough Untrue.

Sorrow has already released two EPs, one for the future garage label l2s recordings and another with broken bubble on Bandcamp. He has a third EP titled “Broken Moments” that is yet to be released but has been made available for stream on Soundcloud:

Broken Moments E.P – Forthcoming by Sorrow.

“Uncertainty” is a brand new track from Sorrow which showcases his range of styles. Here, he exhibits his ability to compose a (post) dubstep track. Although you won’t find any heavy drops, a 3/4 beat and the familiar dubstep “wobble” are still present.

Sorrow – Uncertainty by Sorrow.

Ok so enough with the Soundcloud streams…. I know y’all really just want mp3′s, so here is the magnificent “Dante’s Journey” and the superlative “Existence” off of this year’s Existence – EP:
