Toronto based Indie-Dance duo The Wheel Wells are a weekly staple at Queen Street watering hole Czehoski, for their weekly dance parties and monthly Family Fridays events, which bring local talent to the stage of Toronto’s next hidden gem.

Through the success of their events, the pair just handed over a $1000 cheque to MusiCounts this week from proceeds raised at Czehoski.

Don’t think they are confined to the home base venue. You will soon be able to catch The Wheel Wells at Wrongbar every month, starting this spring, for the disco house series, Pyramid Club. Also be sure to check out their opening set for Grandtheft on Friday March 16th at The Hoxton.

The Wheel Wells have released their latest single ‘Morning Light’. These two have just released their single Morning Light, and have a number of other tracks I’d like to share with you today.

Berlin-based DJ/producer René Pawlowitz’s Shed moniker is a constant source of ground-breaking techno. His 2008 debut album “Shedding the Past” elegantly blurred the boundaries between old school rave and contemporary dub-techno. Shed‘s rigid, metallic rhythms and exalted atmospherics harken back to 80′s Detroit techno, yet, the modern, radical spirit of his music never seems to dissipate. “Shedding the Past” proved to be a highly influential release and the bestowal of 2008′s best album by esteemed electronic e-zine Resident Advisor only affirmed “Shedding’s” magnitude.

2010 saw the release of Shed‘s sophomore LP “The Traveller”. One of my favourite releases of 2k10, “The Traveller” certainly meets, if not exceeds, the standards of quality set by Shed‘s debut album.

Well, it’s now 2012 and we finally have some new tunes from Shed. A new single entitled “The Praetorian / RQ-170″ is now available on Modeselektor‘s 50 Weapons imprint. Gernot Bronsert and Sebastian Szary certainly know how to pick ‘em; between 50 Weapons and Monkeytown, they’ve got a handful of highly anticipated upcoming releases from the likes of Addison Groove, Mouse on Mars, Lazer Sword & Anstam. Not to mention, a 3rd full-length album from Shed! That’s right, Shed is scheduled to drop his latest LP sometime this year via 50 Weapons…stay posted for further details.

If “The Praetorian / RQ-170″ – Single is any indication of what Shed‘s third album will sound like, we’re in for something quite unique. With squishy synths and a leaden rhythm that calls to mind the opening drum hits of Panda Bear‘s “Last Night at the Jetty”, A-side “The Praetorian” sees Pawlowitz weave melodies in and out of a mechanical rhythm with the utmost of grace. B-side “RQ-170″ clicks and hums along ominously until about the midway mark when a haze of gauzy synths envelop the perfunctory rhythms. It’s strange, relentless and oppressive but altogether entrancing.

Stream “The Praetorian” and “RQ-170″ below:

Hailing from Chicago and harkening back to its golden age of house music, Russell Pike aka Russoul is lending new energy to the late-80s sound resurgent in current deep house productions. Though the aesthetic has been targeted by a plethora of producers who have been digging out old records relentlessly for Beatport-ready 2011/2012 “updates”, few have created truly original or innovative works, and fewer still have had the kind of success Azari & III have had.

Pike has managed to find his niche however, craft his ‘sound’, and after a couple years of hard work and some impressive collaborations in the last 8 or 9 months, it looks like things are starting to pay off. For starters, he is a seriously hot topic in the deep house community, receiving support from artists like Art Department and other Hot Creations denizens.

Take his collaboration with Cajmere, for example. The production is tight, funky, and fun, and his vocals lend the track the classic feel. That in and of itself is not particularly special, however.

Lets Dance EP on Beatport

Cajmere and Russoul - Lets Dance (Original Mix)

What IS incredible is how honest his vocals sound and feel. Nothing is pained, forced, or processed in to oblivion. As I write this very article, I’m listening to this track and can easily hear Pike rocking a crowd live on top of some funky house.

And what is sexier than live vocals over house music?

Russoul has laid down several other awesome tracks with Cajmere/Green Velvet. Take some time, have a listen, and let us know if you’re feelin’ it with a comment below!

You might have remembered one of his first tracks exposed here on Salacious circa fall of 2010 with his super remix of “Beam Me Up” by Midnight Magic.

He comes from a very musical background, having started off learning classical music in Washington DC playing violin and the viola, adding trumpet and guitar into the fray in the teenage years.

The multi-instrumentalist moved to NYC in 2002. There he began establishing his network by scoping out the local record shops and spinning around town.

Jacques is currently working with DFA Records creating specialty remixes for labels from all over. Aside from that, he’s been focusing on more original tunes near the tail end of last year.

Watch out for this prolific producer in 2012!

Also check out On The Prowl, Jacques’ label in partnership with Marcos Cabral which has a more tech-house feel.

Crizzly, one of the most notable new guys of 2011 hits us with a new mixtape dubbed (ha ha ha “dub”) Crunkstep. His mastery of bass is impressive, and his crossover style raises the question “where will (the sound of) dubstep go?”

He demonstrates a keen sense of rhythm in his remix of Aj Hernz’s Snap Back Swag. The track’s pre-drop excitement level is dizzying, and the drop delivers fully and satisfyingly.

This new installment gives a taste of his previous work, while showcasing his growth as an artist and hinting at greater things to come! Stylistically, it’s hip-hop inspirations are evidence, and it is accompanied by an understanding of how a dubstep-style drop can really impact an audience!

Please take a listen and make sure to check his Soundcloud!!

One thing I love about music like this is that I can forget it’s dubstep, and be sent back to a time when I was metalhead. And lets be honest, Metal-heads and Dub-heads aren’t that different. We both have an undying love of our respective genres with a faith that is unshakable.

Crizzly has come along way from the first song I heard of his, and most importantly has kept what initially attracted my attention. This dude had it down when Willow Smith was still popular!

Collaborations are not a stretch for this guy either.

Yesterday, Alpha Pup Records dropped the second single from the debut album of intriguing electronic duo Virtual Boy. I can’t say that I’ve heard any buzz surrounding the album or Virtual Boy for that matter, so, I’ve taken it upon myself to put this “buzzwagon” in motion.

“Let Go” opens with a vocoder that is curiously reminiscent of James Blake’s sparse “Lindisfarne I” and segues into an electro-acoustic guitar loop. At 1:36 the track reaches its apex as the beat jolts in and all the elements of sound converge. A brief overlook of Virtual Boy’s biography will reveal to you that members Henry Allen and Preston Walker are classically trained musicians. This is really no surprise considering the precision and technicality of “Let Go”. Their sound owes as much to Bach and Mozart as it does to Ratatat and The Glitch Mob. (bio via wearevirtualboy.com)

Zetto just flew into my lap not too long ago and it was for a good reason! Having little knowledge on the background of who Zetto is or where he came from makes it all the more exciting.

ReySon
Who is Zetto, what is Zetto?
Zetto
Zetto is a project formed by an anonymous Canadian music producer, the first 5 songs were released 17 days ago and 1 just today! There are many releases scheduled over the next year. The music is free… Want to share it as far as possible and will always keep it that way. This project was formed from a strong passion for EDM and hopes to develop over the next year!
ReySon
What are you most afraid of in life?
Zetto
-Most afraid of the world ending in 2012… better get it in now.
-Flying…wing breaks…
-Snakes
They all had to be mentioned
ReySon
If you had to pick between immortality and being able to save the world, which would you pick?
Zetto
Well of course save the world but I’m not going to lie immortality sounds pretty tempting to me, but I’d be a pour soul if I said otherwise.
ReySon
Name one useful tip/trick of the trade that has served you well throughout your musical career.
Zetto
Well I started out playing in a school band not by choice when I was very young. From there I got very into the drums, then the guitar, and so on and so forth.
Shortly after this I have been glued to the EDM scene. The main thing I’ve kept through it all is just my taste and love for all sorts of music.

But the only thing that matters is to get a catchy melody and drop it!
ReySon
What came first, the chicken or the egg?
Zetto
The egg, of course. Lol

UPDATE: HUGE news exclusive for you: you’ll soon be lucky enough to support Memorecks in upcoming collaborative productions AND on tour with a Toronto dubstep institution, whose own productions are heavily influenced by their strong roots in hip-hop, and whom have been strong supporters of Toronto rap. The duo also happens to be personal favourites and close friends to SalaciousSound: Zeds Dead.

Meet James Peck, aka Memorecks; singularly what’s missing from hip-hop AND music performance (irrespective of genre), as well as a positive, well respected, and extremely knowledgeable contributor to the online music community.

Peck has been running a website for a couple years now, and in that time he’s released a series of helpful + high quality Ableton live tutorial videos, a collection of performance videos, and also a pair of recorded works: his Camcorder EP, and most recently an instrumentals album titled Downtime (both at the bottom of this article). He’s also been making sick hip-hop beats in a style nearly lost to the ages: “chopping up breaks, and diggin’ in to crates.”

Crates here is, of course, a simplification of the wide-sampleable-world at Memorecks’ disposal in this current hip-hop epoch. And his style may throw back in some places with the use of classic rap samples, but make no mistake, his music is the future. The sonic landscapes Memorecks builds are comprised by instrumental jazz, traditional Japanese, odd ambient/soundscape, and even harpsichord chops as much as they are from classic arcade and console video game sounds, 808s, and vintage-sounding synths. Its as though he sits nicely at the nexus where electro and hip-hop split off from each other over thirty years ago.

And that description, while accurate, belies the subtle yet most important note about Memorecks beats; the underlying rawness isn’t some kitschy plugin, and its not a technique he copied by watching a youtube video. Peck does it all live.

That’s right – the complex drum arrangements and layering you’re hearing, and even the effects are done live. Peck loads his samples in a program called Ableton live, and connects a MIDI drumpad to his laptop which allows him to plays his eclectic selection of sounds as though they were an instrument. Once he’s done that he can create songs on the fly, freestyling, switching between sets of samples, and he can also apply effects combinations which he sets up before a performance.

My absolute favourite track is Cartridge, off the Camcorder EP. It samples the greatest single player RPG (nerd alert) ever made on a console gaming system: Final Fantasy 7. Here’s the sample

And his outrageously good flip:

Memorecks - Cartridge (Original Mix).mp3

Or if you prefer, watch him do it live!

And another couple favourites of mine:

Memorecks - Dead Robots.mp3
Memorecks - Deepest.mp3

Now that you’re a believer, go support him on Facebook.

Thomas J. Rubeli, a.k.a. Aech_Rom, is a relatively unknown producer from Switzerland who makes beautiful and inspired electronic music. Although one might be inclined to label Aech_Rom as Drum & Bass or IDM, these labels are merely part of the equation when considering his genre.

It is difficult to place Aech_Rom’s music into one specific genre. His styles range from Glitch to Ambient, IDM, Breakbeat, Drum & Bass, Drill & Bass, Experimental, and even Chiptune. Certainly, Rubeli’s style is derived from similarly varied artists like Aphex Twin, Autechre, or Squarepusher but Rubeli does not blatantly mimic these artists.

No, in fact, he creates a unique atmosphere that surrounds his music and somehow captures both the serene and the chaotic. Rubeli’s take on a sound that could potentially sound dated or unoriginal is instead quite refreshing and modernized.

Aech_Rom’s latest release Llen Part 1: LN47 Arrival (out now for free download on Complex Sound Sagacity) gives sufficient proof that Rubeli has a seat reserved for him in ‘Electronica Heaven’…right next to Richard D. James.

(A big thanks goes out to Xander for showing me “Sick Duck”… yes it is SICK!)

Back in June, our very own DJ Cal posted the video for Dillon Francis and Diplo’s “Que! Que!”. Y’all remember this? The one with the dancing twelve year olds and the 90s-style clip art graphics. (If not, click here) Anyway, this hilariously outrageous video was directed by none other than LIL INTERNET! LIL INTERNET, formerly known as RedFoxx, is the pseudonym of the ALL CAPS-loving, cheap 90′s animation aficionado Julian ‘Haterskeeptalkinumakinmefamous’ Foxworth (as he’s known on Facebook). Foxworth’s days are spent working as the senior director and editor of the trendy website karmalooptv.com, but when the sun goes down he transforms into super DJ LIL INTERNET! LIL INTERNET makes music for the end of the world. His throbbing, coked-out club anthems are the perfect soundtrack to your wild 2012 apocalypse rave party. So, it makes perfect sense that LIL INTERNET samples Britney Spears’ “Til’ the World Ends” on his blissed-out track titled “BRITNEY SPEARS ILLUMINATI GLITCH”. The four tracks posted on LIL INTERNET’s soundcloud exhibit Foxworth’s affinity for 90′s rave culture, moombahthon riddims, and cocaine (listen to “DMXICO [MASTER]” and you will see what I mean). LIL INTERNET’s musical style follows in the same vein as fellow rave revivalists Pictureplane and Modern Witch. Foxworth’s personal aesthetic could be attributed to the whole “witch-house” genre but even so, LIL INTERNET stands alone. Here’s some words of wisdom from the man himself: “If we took all the gun powder out of every bullet and bomb we could have fireworks every night.” true dat LIL INTERNET…true dat. (quote via antennamag)

Sorrow’s forte is versatility. This guy (His name is Joe and he is from Birmingham, UK) can do dubstep, garage, deep garage, 4×4 garage, grime, 2-step, ambient, emotional piano music and any other dubby, minimalist sub-genres you want to throw in. His skittering, 2-step rhythms, melodic textures, and dark urban ambiance are derived from early UK garage innovators like MJ Cole, Todd Edwards, and Wookie. Sorrow’s style can also be attributed to the more recent UK garage phenom Burial. In fact, Sorrow did a remix of the track “Homeless” off of Burial’s 2007 breakthrough Untrue.

Burial – Homeless (Sorrow Remix) by Sorrow.

Sorrow has already released two EPs, one for the future garage label l2s recordings and another with broken bubble on Bandcamp. He has a third EP titled “Broken Moments” that is yet to be released but has been made available for stream on Soundcloud:

Broken Moments E.P – Forthcoming by Sorrow.

“Uncertainty” is a brand new track from Sorrow which showcases his range of styles. Here, he exhibits his ability to compose a (post) dubstep track. Although you won’t find any heavy drops, a 3/4 beat and the familiar dubstep “wobble” are still present.

Sorrow – Uncertainty by Sorrow.

Ok so enough with the Soundcloud streams…. I know y’all really just want mp3′s, so here is the magnificent “Dante’s Journey” and the superlative “Existence” off of this year’s Existence – EP:

DJ Nekbath’s name can be seen on various house collections from Pacha to Sébastien Léger, all via DJ Center Records. There isn’t a whole lot of information on this character; however, his grooves speak volumes. The louder, the better you’ll understand.

Experimental with various types of house, he certainly stays true to the French House/Disco vibes with chopped & looped samples that will have you humming for days.

Pierre de la Touche & Stephen Falken are a dynamic duo who are instrumental to the rise of Nu-Disco. Together as The Outrunners, they make the most of their synthetic arsenal to create smooth melodies which open a whole new realm of electronic music, aside from your heavy bangers. They’ve been working hard with the Valerié collective and have recently released a four track EP entitled “Running for Love and Money”, on Flexx records. Without a doubt, the sound is very vintage italo-disco pop with a hint of dreamy synthesis, creating a soothing atmosphere enveloped in a mist of nostalgia.

I recently visited Halifax and really really liked it; alot more than a Toronto-snob grade 12-version of myself would. In the over-saturated music market that is Toronto, we often lose sight that music is not just about bands coming to YOU in the biggest city in Canada. In a smaller town, bands come through less often, but the shows are usually in better venues and to smaller, more intimate crowds. Their local weeklies are looking as little to Toronto as NOW or EYE are seeking out Hali or Vic or Brantford, but amazing stuff is happening nonetheless, something that often leaves big city-ers asking “BUT HOW?”.  There is something exciting about heading to a new city and seeing how they do things and most of the time, they do them damn well. I find that smaller cities’ indie music is a lot more collaborative or more healthily incestuous than other the posterboys for Canadian music ‘collectives’. Actually, I think collectivity is something that Torontonian music is artificially grasping at. BUT I DIGRESS.

This brings me to the other side of our country. Victoria has a scene that I’ve already been introduced to by some Toronto ex-pats that got pretty involved out there. Some of them are back now: I went to the Almonds, Cohen and Slam Dunk show at Teranga in Kensington on June 24, and it was sweaty in a good way.

Full disclosure: I am friends with 3/5 of Almonds, Cohen‘s present membership. Still, when did that stop anyone from writing about a fucking great band? A,C have gone through many line-up changes, especially since relocating to Toronto, but their kind of crooning dance-pop has maintained its ability to fit into any show (seriously, they’ve played at laundromats and household kitchens.) They kicked up the bass and drums while opening at Teranga for Slam Dunk, a fellow Victoria band that I can only describe as “power country” (and that’s a good thing). The resulting dance pit was excellent, especially for a show almost exclusively advertised on facebook. Meanwhile, boasting a frontman like Brock Edwards, his cool vocals and loveable lyrics (“You’re not the reason why I’m here/I just migrated with the deer”) A,C can easily be coupled with a lone snare drum for a set with just as much awesome, though slightly less sweat. Their Teranga set really really impressed me, being the first time I’d seen them play a harder and more upbeat show. Recent addition, female vocalist Jesse Crowe, compliments Edwards perfectly. I can only stress over and over that their pop is breezy, danceable and totally accessible, and going to see it played live will always be a different experience from the recording and shows past. That’s usually what a great live band is about anyways, no matter what part of Canada they come from, right?

Almonds Cohen - Digging For Clams.mp3

Almonds Cohen - I Migrated With The Deer.mp3

A,C are part of the Old Life Records line-up, which puts out ALOT of solid Victoria, BC independent stuff and now has some roots in Toronto as well. Go to the site! Listen to the likes of Colourbook, dreamboat, Young Lions and the Macadamia Brothers! It will be so worth it for you.

As a bonus, here’s my favourite song from that part of Canada! Dreamboat - Sunbathin.mp3

And remember, Torontonians: “Small is good, man.”

Almonds, Cohen play Toronto again August 4th at Rancho Relaxo with Armen at the Bazaar and Ismism.

These are all really high quality DJ edits, so make sure you get to the vocals before you make a decision!

True pioneers of a sound that broke all the rules back in 1998, Stanton Warriors took garage and twisted it beyond all recognition, dropping speaker shattering bass lines and massive beats…all to devastating effect.

Stanton Warriors had arrived.

In 2001, Stanton Warriors laid down a fresh new sound with the seminal ‘Stanton Sessions’ that was instantly signed to XL Recordings. The mix saw off competition from Fat Boy Slim and Deep Dish to win Best Album at the Dance Star Awards, and again at the Muzik Mag Awards where they beat Dave Clarke and Danny Tenaglia, whilst the mix recently featured in Mixmags top 50 best compilations ever industry poll. ‘Stanton Sessions’ went on to become the biggest selling breaks album of all time – a feat as yet unsurpassed.

Overnight, Stanton Warriors became the hottest producers on the planet, and today they continue to stay at the very pinnacle of their profession. High profile remixes for such luminaries as Missy Elliot, Fat Boy Slim, Basement Jaxx, Mylo, Freeform Five, and Busta Rhymes amongst others constantly fill their diary, whilst their own original material continues to push the boundaries of musical excellence.

They are also incomparable when it comes to working with vocalists. In a scene renowned for instrumentals, Stanton Warriors have jetted around the world to record with vocal talents that include Big Daddy Kane, Twista and The Beatnuts, implementing house, electro, hip -hop and funk elements into their sound.

In 2006 Stanton Warriors signed their debut album ‘Lost Files’ to V2, becoming one of the first breaks act to sign to a major. Released to massive critical acclaim, ‘Lost Files’ received support from a variety of djs across a variety of different scenes, with major support from MTV and Pete Tong on Radio 1. The album was also play listed to Radio 1 & XFM daytime shows plus countless other stations around the world.

‘Stanton Sessions 2′ was released at the same time and was immediately voted ‘Album Of The Year’ on Annie Nightingale’s BBC Radio 1 Show., And this is not forgetting the request to mix Fabric’s milestone 30th compilation. Which was voted ‘Timeout Compilation Of The Year’ and ‘Breakspoll Compilation Of The Year’ respectively, with the mix ultimately became one of the fastest selling in the series.

Last year Skint Records brought together Dom and Mark’s killer versions of Gorillaz’ ‘Feel Good Inc’, Alter Ego’s legendary ‘Rocker’ and Azzido Da Bass’s ‘Dooms Night’ amongst a great deal more on ‘Remixes’. The compilation perfectly showcased the Stantons sound and made it clear why DJ Mag included them in their recent list of the ’50 Best Remixers Of All Time’.

Their most recent accolades include their placing as Number 1 djs at Breakspoll and Number 1 breaks djs in DJ Magazines Top 100 for the past two years in a list awash with trance and house djs. The awards are testament to having played at every major festival and super club around the world – treading an international path that few djs can rival.

Stanton dj sets are famed for incorporating exclusive original tracks mixed with homemade edits / remixes of cutting edge sounds from underground house through to abstract hip hop and everything in between. It’s all blended into a melting pot of low down booty electro punkishness, and is continually reminding the world why Stanton Warriors have remained unrivalled in their genre for more than a decade.

Modern Eyes is the latest single from Australia-via-L.A electro-rock act Jump Jump Dance Dance, taken from their self-titled debut album due August 2010. The video was directed by Clemens Habicht (behind Friendly Fires’ brilliant Skeleton Boy), and is based on a psychological phenomenon called “pareidolia”, where humans imagine faces in objects, both a survival mechanism and a symptom of a psychotic disorder. With Grum and Human Life lending their remix touches to their last single, Modern Eyes will feature equally hot remixes from Lifelike, Beni, Bit Funk, Neon Stereo and Vindata.

Jump Jump Dance Dance are already one of the hottest emerging acts in the world right now. Their debut single Show Me the Night was a Hype Machine Top 10, Bigstereo #1 track (twice!) that was crowned UK’s prestigious Record of the Day. And the band recently played L.A.’s iconic Whisky A Go Go. Not bad for a brand new local signing. But then again, few brand new local signings have a pedigree as impressive as that of these Australian-American electro-rock conspirators. Chris Carter and Simon Lewicki had already amassed a wealth of experience – Carter as an in-demand DJ and vocalist and Simon as the mastermind behind the celebrated US Billboard #1 Club act Chili Hi Fly plus multi-ARIA nominated Groove Terminator and Tonite Only – before uniting to create Jump Jump Dance Dance.

But Jump Jump Dance Dance isn’t about rehashing former glories, as glorious as they may be. Instead, it’s an all-new beast with its own unique energy and style. First coming together over a shared love of synthesizers, Australian culture and sweaty dance floors, the renowned studio wizards began to furiously write the blueprint of the Jump Jump Dance Dance sound, exploring and tweaking the happy medium between dance and rock music. Clearly, the pair were onto something special as their first batch of demos immediately hooked Australian imprint etcetc – the home of PNAU (producers of Empire Of The Sun) and Lost Valentinos (helmed by super-producer Ewan Pearson) as well as internationals Mylo, Datarock and The Knife.

Determined to once-and-for-all perfect the ultimate hybrid between these two often-disparate genres, the duo elevated themselves above the electro scene by turning Jump Jump Dance Dance into a fully-fledged, truly organic live band where instantaneous guitar riffs collide with towering synths and club energy. The duo’s fascination with melding genres carried over to the recording process for their debut LP, which saw them recruit heavyweight US producer/mixers Dave Sardy (the man responsible for records from Wolfmother, Oasis, Soulwax and The Ting Tings) and Mark Needham (The Killers, Bloc Party, 3OH!3), as well as Australian dance industry veteran Sameer Sengupta (a.k.a. Poxy Music a.k.a. Pocket 808, provider of legendary mixes for Alter Ego and Green Velvet) to lend his formidable experience to some final mixes.

With their debut album under lock and key for the moment, Jump Jump Dance Dance are preparing to spread the electro-rock gospel to new fans with killer live shows and a slew of turbo-charged remixes on the way. Although it’s still very early days for the band, Jump Jump Dance Dance aren’t wasting any time in showing us all exactly why they’ve come so far so quickly. Expect to get converted any minute now. As Bigstereo put it after the band hit #1 on their monthly chart, “We love JJDD, You love JJDD”.
