This week’s chart is an overview of popular electro and progressive house for April 2012. I’ve been (rather unfairly) favouring midtempo and deeper sounds on my charts lately, despite the fact that my last several gigs have all been “electro + house bangers for raging” nights.

I’m not gonna lie here.. in my electro and house sets I have been heavily favouring stuff released at the end of 2011. There just hasn’t been a lot of new stuff which I’ve been enjoying. Putting those on my weekly chart would seem to defeat the purpose of having a chart however, so this isn’t necessarily an overview of stuff that I’m playing – rather, it’s stuff that I’m listening to AND incorporating in to my sets.

This week’s top ten features a collection of midtempo house and disco jams that I’ve been piecing together for some opening sets on the bigger stages I’ve been playing lately. My goal is to break records, keep my sets accessible and funky primarily by selecting tracks with vocals, and never compromising with respect to song quality.

It’s more important than ever, I think, to support artists that are making music with soul and heart. Sure it’s a great feeling to get a huge response from your crowd by playing Knife Party, but it’s way more gratifying for me and a greater success to play something that perhaps most of your audience hasn’t heard yet, but they really get in to.

I think that was the major success of my gig on Saturday at The Hoxton. I played a solid opening set of mostly midtempo house, ramped up the energy just high enough near the end so that the headlining DJ could knock ‘em dead, and played probably a dozen or more records that most of my Avicii-loving audience hadn’t heard (disclaimer: I did not play Avicii), while interspersing my selection with house classics to keep the energy and engagement up.

The vocals are what really make and drive this track. The layering and arrangement are both complex, but the simple phrase “what I do” really gives the song a centre for the listener.

9: Ramiro Lopez – My Lady Music

Another great midtempo track with a rolling groove that’s perfect for an opening set… or the after party!

8: Lawnchair Generals – Don’t Stop (Looks Like Dub)

This rolling disco tune could easily find it’s way in to a tech house set with the right presentation. It has an energy that feels like it’s been suppressed, as though it’s ready to burst out of the speakers.

7: Treasure Fingers – Rooftop Revival (Kastle Remix)

This one is a free download from Scion A/V – head here to grab the whole EP.

6: Soul Clap – Lets Groove On

Loving this one for the classic 80s percussion and the lyrics “I took out time to write rhymes and get live as fuck.”

5: French Fries – Yo Vogue

I am digging on vogue/booty/trap house HARD right now. Really wish there was more of a market for the stuff in Toronto. Pretty much every party I hit up during SXSW threw down a little of each, and the response was always great. This is my fave right now, and I think the most accessible because the vocals are catchy, the rhythm sounds like 4/4, and the half-time second break is extremely exciting. Still.. this will be relegated to opening sets in my catalogue, at least as long as I’m playing in T.O.

4: Friendly Fires – Hurting (Tensnake Remix)

This blew up at my gig on Saturday when I dropped it during my warmup set. It’s one of those tracks that you hear for the first time and think “damn, I recognize this!” Awesome vocals and a light summery rhythm.

3: The Mekanism – Can’t Believe

This relaxing number is just begging to be played outside on a sunny day next to a pool, patio, or rooftop. Goes especially well with sunsets.

2: Sacha Robotti – The Major

A great track for an opening set. Funky, with an energy that makes you feel like you’re on the cusp of something exciting.

1: Fur Coat ft. Cari Golden – You and I

I could wake up and go to sleep to this song. Addictive vocals and a hypnotic + deep rhythm that ebbs and then envelops you in cycles.

This week’s Top Ten features a collection of house and techno tracks that you’ll be hearing at the after party this week in Austin if you’re down for SXSW, and at the pool next week if you’re heading to Miami for WMC.

Sorry for the brevity this week friends, but I just arrived in Austin myself, and instead of writing this on the plane as I was supposed to I ended up sleeping. And now it’s time to go gorge myself on the free nosh + libations at the many SXSW parties I have RSVP’d to.

Charlton booked up a the biggest show in Miami, supporting Tensnake, Fred Falke, Treasure Fingers, and many more.

7. Nufrequency – Streetlife Feat Ke (Bocca Grande Remix)

A bit of a curveball compared to the rest of the mix, but something I’d be nonetheless proud to fit in a set with the rest of these tracks.

6. Nina Kraviz – Ghetto Kraviz

Absolutely loving this dirtybird star’s work right now. Few producers span the breadth of genre she does.

5. I Cube – Hnt

Black is back. Credit to my pal Lunney on this one.. loving the deep funky rhythms.

4. XI – Immunity

Toronto x Berlin artist XI spent time this month on tour with Zeds Dead. Can’t think of any other artist that stands apart so distinctly from other producers right now.

3. Art Department – Tell Me Why (Brennan Green Version)

These Toronto natives are back in town from a very long stint in Europe, and are rumoured to be working on an album and more.

2. Laura Jones – Love In Me (Eats Everything S Loving You Re Work)

Simultaneously a relaxing and yet very funky track.

1. Fur Coat feat. Cari Golden – You and I

Straight up the biggest jam of the spring. The vocals are infectious, the bass deep and enveloping, and it’s all tied together by a very trippy percussion set that really makes it pop.

Every week we have a prolific crate-digger deliver a highly curated chart from a specific genre area. This week – Cal charts the LA electro-disco duo Oliver’s ten greatest musical achievements.

For the last couple months I’ve more or less retired electro house from my rotation. I haven’t heard much of anything really innovative or fresh sounding in probably close to a year, and I am not sure whether to expect a surprise at this point or not.

I think a lot of artists composing original works are feeling the same as well. I’ve been noticing a resurgence of disco sounds, and there are plenty of great artists pushing forward and crossing over genres.

Meet Oliver “Oligee” Goldstein and Vaughn “U-Tern” Oliver, aka Oliver.

This extremely talented pair of musicians reside in LA, where they’re making all kinds of disco x electro x pop sounds. Recently they’ve marked some major milestones, first and foremost of which is the top ten Beatport-charting with their track Dirty Talk, which has resided there for weeks and gained them international attention.

I suspect we’ll be seeing lots more music from this pair this year, and I can’t wait!

Every week we have a prolific crate-digger deliver a highly curated chart from a specific genre area. This week – Cal brings you his ten biggest “next level house” tracks of the moment.

In just a week and a half I’m going to be performing at my first international booking. Suffice it to say, this is a momentous and exciting moment for me and my career. I’m also fortunate enough to have it in one of the best markets in the U.S. – Chicago.

It’s not just the third biggest, it’s also the birthplace of a genre of music I hold near and dear. As preparation for my gig at Vision on Friday March 2nd, I have been digging through all the old Chicago House classics, and just about everything new that sounds like the stuff. Think Cajual Recordings, Hot Creations, Crosstown Rebels, Turbo, and even DFA + Desolat.

Today I have stuff for you from what I think are some of the finest labels in electronic music right now. Some of the stuff is off-beat or trip-hop, yet others are deep, tech, or even acid house, and yet others are on here because they are unstoppably funky vocal house. The unifying theme: all of these tracks are next level. They draw on disparate influences, are sometimes unconventional-sounding, but are all tracks I’d be proud to move a dance floor with.

And I know people in Chicago will be discerning!

10: Boddika – Up and Dance

This off-beat, bass-centric track is complemented by sparse percussion and very catchy vocal samples. It was offered as a free download around Christmas time.

9: Guti – We Shall Overcome

This one came out on Guti’s label Desolat last year, and is a great example of his superior musicianship.

8: Azari & III – Reckless With Your Love (Tiga Remix)

This remix of Montreal native Tiga was released on Rec Room, and is a worthy complement to the incredible, anthemic original.

7: Joe Goddard – Gabriel ft. Valentina

This was released mid-year on James Murphy’s DFA Records. The vocals make it an instant classic and big dance floor driver.

6: Danny Daze – Fall Away From Love

This was named the ‘Essential New Tune’ a while back, before it’s release on Hot Creations. Danny Daze is just one of the several artists on the label that I can’t get enough of.

5: Jamie Woon – Night Air (Solomun Edit)

Not often you find a track of this quality released for free, but here it is. Absolutely incredible vocals.

4: Infinity Ink – Games

Another delicious Hot Creations number. Decidedly more downtempo than the rest of the group, but also very funky.

3: XI – Immunity

A trip-hop number from Canadian-born x Berlin-based bass music producer XI, released recently on Orca Recs. He’ll be touring with Zeds Dead for the next couple weeks on their Living Dead Tour.

2: Nico Lindsay – Haunted

Absolutely sick shuffle-y percussion, and another free download. Can definitely see American hip-hop taking some lessons from this one.

1: Cajmere & Russoul – Let’s Dance

Chicago’s own Cajmere, aka Curtis Jones, dropped my track of the moment on his own Cajual Recs recently, with Russoul – if you haven’t heard of him, read my recent feature. I think he’s going to be one of the biggest vocalists of the year.

Every Tuesday we publish a highly curated chart for you. This week, New York City production duo Disco Fries give us their top ten songs of the moment as they begin their residency at The Palm, Las Vegas.

New York City’s Disco Fries just collaborated with singer Niles Mason (fresh from his appearance on Louder Than Words with David Guetta and Afrojack) for their new single “Born To Fly”, a funky French-flavoured bassline number with stretched strings and filtered passes topped off by Mason’s soul-rock vocals. In addition, Alex Kenji tweaks the controls for the more clubby excursion while the Disco Fries own Liftoff remix gives it the electro-house treatment.

So, I promised you last week that my new and improved weekly top ten charts weren’t going to be the ‘here r 10 kewl blog songz for free downloads guys LOLOLOL’ lists which, those of you who have been following the site for a while, would be used to. I broke you guys in easy, with something familiar. Something that you’re used to hearing on Salacious Sound, and something I’m used to writing about. Today’s installment breaks from that form, somewhat.

Don’t say you weren’t warned.

This week I’m proud to present a format I explored briefly last year with the top ten – an artist feature style top ten chart – albeit with an artist much different than I am used to covering in my articles.

I’m also proud to present this installment because it’s about an artist that I think is doing something cool, whom is incredibly talented on the production front, and who puts me completely out of my comfort zone as a writer.

Ghostek’s music is beautiful, complex, and extremely well-produced; that’s easy enough to point out. I don’t, however, find it easy to assess, dissect, or put in a box. I like that.

One last thing, and I am truly sorry to belliger those of you who are already commenters

#10: Ghostek – Secrets

The loopy vocal sample in Secrets makes for a very confusing, manic composition. The dark, heavy, almost industrial + mechanistic percussion is accented by subtle and nearly-inaudible whispers and an airy pad that provides relief from what is otherwise a very sinister track, and lends space to the namesake vocal sample of the track at 3:24 “she had a secret”. This one is a free download.

#9: Excision – Subsonic (Ghostek Remix)

I was a bit shocked to see an Excision remix in Ghostek’s discography, as it was one of the last tracks that I actually listened to. I like how Excisions hard, aggressive electro-dubstep style elements are transposed against and bent to Ghostek’s much more suppressed UKG style. Subsonic has a 1′ish minute intro fitting Ghostek’s aesthetic, and while the latter sections of the track are a definite precursor to the aforementioned aggressive style Excision has now taken on, Ghostek has appropriated and moulded the sounds to his needs. #8: Ghostek – Kwality

This one has an undeniably island (Caribbean that is) feel, albeit somewhat darker than I’m used to hearing. And I’m not just referring to the vocalist! The characteristically dubby production style, from the ample tape delay applied to the vox, to the lazer fx, are an obvious throwback/nod to the influences of this track. This one is a free download.

#6: Ghostek and Buck UK – Farsight

I think what I like about this track most is that, at any given point, your attention is focused exactly where the producers want you to focus. They shift that focus a lot, and do so expertly and artfully. Ghostek and Buck UK’s composition is mostly focuses on the upper-frequency percussion elements in the fore, relegating the suppressed + heavily filtered kick to the background. Their frequent empty, spacey, atmospheric bass-drop-out breaks leave you feeling weightless, often with only one percussion element like a muted tambourine and their soothing pads or distortion to keep your attention locked. And locked it stays. They also utilize vocal samples throughout which give the track an incredible energy. Look for the vox at 2:50 “drop” several elements of the track, strip the composition down, and refocus your attention. This one is a free download.

Definitely the most unique instrumentation of all Ghostek’s tracks – his use of the Pipa, a four string Chinese lute-type instrument, unique yet accessible. The track has a ton of movement, especially when he reverses the samples to play the lute-notes backwards. This one is a free download.

#1: Ghostek – Distances & Coffee

Complex, shuffly percussion, incredibly lush sub-bass accented masterfully by expert use of space, and in the latter half of the track a harder + grittier mid-bass element. This song is an awesome example of the power of what you don’t include in a song – every time the enveloping sub-bass drops out, your attention snaps back to the eery atmospheric elements of the track, such as the echoey metallic striking noises. This song transposes lofi elements like vinyl-distortion against elements like the sub-bass, which have a high quality of production. This one is a free download.

It’s been a minute, huh friends? A lot of you have been foaming at the mouth for the return of the Tuesday Top Ten, and I’m proud to announce that, now that I’m working on the site full-time, I feel like I have the time to devote to a weekly installment.

Here’s the thing – the top ten isn’t an easy format, and I’m going to vary genres from week to week, but I hope to keep it focused on chart-style offerings. In the past I’ve done “here are 10 cool blog songs bro” posts, and they don’t make me happy. I want to write articles for you, that move you, with awesome + highly-curated tunes that you can have for free, if they’re free, and go buy, if you’re supposed to buy them.

Keep an eye out, and give me lots of feedback so that I know to keep going (or seppuku myself).

10. Riva Starr and Fatboy Slim – Get Naked (Louis La Roche Remix)

Honestly, I didn’t even have to listen to this one to know I was going to fall in love. Little did I know that Beardyman is ALSO on this track!! Riva Starr and Fatboy Slim provided an incredible starting point with their original, and Louis La Roche in typical form has flipped it masterfully. 9. Real Nice and Cubiq – Had Enough (Kreature Remix)

Nothing confirms more obviously that deeper darker sounds, especially vocals, are being transposed against the lighter fun elements of dance music to popular effect. I could see this track going off at just about any time of night at a party, given the right setup.

8. Miguel Campbell – Something Special

I heard this one a month or two back on Lazaro Casanova’s mixtape, and I’ve been absolutely hooked since. It transposes the very downtempo feel and soulful vocals at the beginning of the track with the rising funky action of the song masterfully. By the time you’re halfway through, the vocals have climbed with the rhythm and groove, and your feet are moving themselves.

This is one of the releases that made Hot Creations one of the top 5 labels in the world, in 2011.

7. Niels Freidel – Good (Les Loups I.D. Mix)

I dropped this twice over the weekend and it was a big.. BIG hit each time. This song has so much action, I’m not sure where to start. Very groovy percussion, Daft Punk-era filter-disco style floaty synths, and sparkly pads make this track impossibly groovy. It doesn’t have vocals, but really speaks to an audience.

6. The Magician ft. Jeppe – I Dont Know What to Do (Erkka Mix)

Jeppe has one of the best hook-voices I’ve ever heard, period. Someone needs to lock this guy down and make him their signature sound as a producer, because this guy puts his pants on one leg at a time.

Bit of a classic ‘Your Love’ feel to the arpeggio on this one, with lots of shuffle and warm disco sounds. Another lovely free download, care of The Magician!!

5. Senor Stereo ft Danny Daze – Unintentional (U-Tern Remix)

Senor Stereo, for all their skill as a super group, has not had the breakout exposure I expected they’d have experienced by now. Of course every head who knows the components is aware that 2012 is going to be an absolutely massive year for Joe Maz, Gigamesh, and Danny Daze. If you’re not up, get up – I’ve written about all of them!

All that said, what really drew my attention to this release was U-Tern’s genius remix. Forgive the delay on this one, but it’s in this chart deservingly, and in my heavy rotation right now.

4. Parallel Dance Ensemble – Shopping Cart (Maxxi Soundsystem Remix)

This is one of those tracks that can unite the hipster-dance kids and the hipster-music-snob kids. Awesome dancey vibe x shuffle-y percussion combined with deeper sounds, and oft-eerie pads / vocals. This one is going to be in my rotation a while!!

3. Oliver – Dirty Talk

Simply one of the biggest tracks of the moment. It has a retro x Chromeo-like feel, without sounding like it’s appropriated anyone’s style. In addition, there’s a remix on the Kitsune-released EP by SalaciousSound favourites Punks Jump Up.

2. The Rapture – How Deep Is Your Love (Cassian Remix)

I have been following Cassian for some time now – he’s one of the most exciting acts in Australia at the moment, and has released yet another amazing nu-disco remix. All of this guy’s work is absolute class – be sure to dig deeper on Salacious after you finish this article.

This one is distinctly darker that his usual, making use of The Rapture’s wonderful vocals and piano stabs, with his own twist on the rhythmn and bass sections which make it a surefire dancefloor-shaker! Best of all, it’s also a free track released on his Soundcloud channel.

We’re part way through festival season in the Northern Hemisphere, and after a month of playing for swelling crowds as large as a quarter million (ie Electric Daisy Carnival 2011 Las Vegas) DJs around the world are taking account of the tracks that moved crowds the best. And by crowds I obviously mean sexy girls, because who really gives a shit about the guys? It doesn’t matter what you play, because they’re going to have a good time as long as the girls are shaking their asses, tossing their hair, biting their lip during a buildup, screaming in ecstasy after an orgasmic drop, raising their hands to expose their sweat-glistening sideb… I mean show appreciation for the DJ and the track, etc.

Now on the surface, this statement may SEEM like something of a betrayal to my predominantly male following on SalaciousSound. That would be a misinterpretation though – I am definitely all about the homies. All I can offer is assurance that you are in good hands. I’m an expert, and I give you my word that I am looking out for your best interest at the party. And by your best interest, I mean my best interest, and my interest is seeing sexy girls shaking their asses, sideboob, orgasmic, etc.

So what are the crowds loving? Well there are the usual festival classics – lots of Daft Punk and Red Hot Chili Peppers, some Rage Against the Machine, and even Blur (remember Song 2?) I heard at least six different incarnations of Otherside down at EDC last month, and what I learned was that at a festival you can play almost whatever you want, as long as it’s anthemic. Warp 1.9 by the Bloody Beetroots is a good example of a song that I would have thought was completely played out, but each of the four times I heard it the track nearly (sigh) blew the tops off the girls in the audience.

Some of these are from late last year and have been rinsed on the Australian festival circuit, and some are recent hits, but all of them were massively popular at EDC. So without further adieu, here is a list of the tracks that caused the biggest sing alongs, drew the biggest crowd responses, and most importantly made me smile (downstairs).

So after something of a hiatus MSTRKRFT are back in business, having offered two new tracks for download on their web page recently. Honestly, it sounds to me like they’ve been listening to a lot of Iron Maiden lately. While this is not a bad thing – I am a huge fan of both MSTRKRFT’s latest tracks AND Iron Maiden – it is a comment meant to point out that rock electro is not new, especially not for MSTRKRFT – these lesser rinsed tracks spanning from 2006 to 2008 (I think) will make my point. Also, if I see one more blogger writing “omg totally new sounds great job evolving dubstep and electro MSTRKRFT!!!!1one” I’m going to have a shitfit, file a complaint, and suggest that their blogging license be revoked. For fucks’ sake people – shit can be good and not be revolutionary, or some ingenious new combination of two things nobody could have ever possibly thought to put together before. Do your homework peoples!

Jamie xx is the producer for London-based band The xx. He has spent the last few years working with incredible musicians and bands like Gil Scott-Heron, Hot Chip, and Florence + The Machine, and recently released a new remix of Adele’s latest ‘Rolling in the Deep’. I had some friends get at me about Childish Gambino this week, so I figured I’d share the latest iteration of the track that has been floating around.

Classixx is a duo from LA that makes groovy west cost disco, as well as some of the best synth laden ballads ever made (see Green Eyed Love). Over the last couple years they’ve worked with some of the absolute best musicians in the business, including Drop the Lime, Mayer Hawthorne, Major Lazer, Phoenix, Holy Ghost!, and YACHT. Their sound is uniquely special because, by and large, their songs are produced with analog devices; no surprise – the musicianship of these two gents really shows through in their music. Their DJ set is also something to be reckoned with! At the risk of gushing, I will restrict myself to saying that Classixx is among my absolute favourite acts – they’re very much the west coast’s answer to Azari & III.

They’re receiving a lot of attention right now because they just released an EP with Green Label Sound. The track is available for streaming on this article, and if you want to download it free hit this link.

I’ve been following my Londoner friends Punks Jump Up for a couple years ago – I think I first discovered their remix of Lykke Li’s Little Bit in early 2009, and have been fiending for more ever since. Their fun, dancey pop was one of the sounds I shaped my live set sound around in 2009, and set me on a binge of Treasure Fingers and Breakbot. All of these tracks right the border that the pair typically does between synth pop and nu-disco, and are rife with catchy vocals that could turn anyone’s dancefloor-frown upside-down.

Here, for you today, are in order of popularity, the 8 most popular top ten artist lists of 2010.

8: AN21 and Max Vangeli

Shocking that this pair’s list would be the lowest on this list given they have produced some of my favourite tracks of the year, but you can’t argue with the numbers I guess. These guys made a splash in 2010, but I am really hoping that they break out hard in 2011 (and come to Toronto!) This was my personal favourite top ten of the year.

7: The Remix Artist Collective (RAC)

RAC did some serious work this year, releasing hit after hypemachine hit. Their knack for remixing, mashing, and just generally giving people the chance to hear their favourite songs for the ‘first time’ again is unquestionable. Hope to see lots more this coming year!!

Lykke Li definitely showed some staying power, popping up on this list despite most of the remixes being about a year old.. tons of quality stuff there that readers were in to!

I think this one mostly floated on the success of Kanye’s release this year, but the remixes (mostly being from 2009) are top-notch!

Chiddy is no joke.. the guy is a pop music genious, and is going to be one of the greats. I laughed my ass off when we interviewed Donnis last year, and he was like “yo who’s Chiddy?” You can bet he knows his name now…

3: Robyn

Robyn had one of the biggest albums of the year, adding to and pushing the bounds of an already great body of work. Her vocals were remixed more times than La Roux was in 2009 I bet, and by yet bigger artists. This was my second favourite top ten of the year after AN21 + Max Vangeli.

2: DJ Kue

2010′s best pop-music remixer DJ Kue had SalaciousSound’s second-most popular top ten list of the year. His track selection for remixing is impeccable, and his execution near flawless. Kue’s remixes are exciting because they give the listener a chance to hear a song they love for the first time again, but they aren’t your typical ‘blog house’ remixes – they are extremely high quality, and I expect we will see some proper releases from this chap in 2011!

The Ellie Goulding top ten was great because of the range in the remixes that were available – people’s remixes range from deep house to electro and dubstep. There are just a ton of great artists on this post that broke out this year in a big way – AN21, Max Vangeli, At Dawn We Rage – and others that have added to already impressive existing bodies of work – Alex Metric, and Russ Chimes. Ellie Goulding’s release this year was as remixable as Robyn’s, and I hope to hear more over the coming months.

Ellie Goulding is a BRIT award winning, BBC Sound of 2010 poll topping English singer-songwriter that, aside from having a huge year with her release of Lights / Bright Lights becoming wildly successful, has also had a huge year on music blogs having been remixed to the nth degree. This is just a small compilation of the many remixes that I think are great. The AN21 + Max Vangeli remix is by far the best imo, and I’ve rinsed it at almost every gig since September. The Penguin Prison remix is really jammin, and gave me a serious case of deja vu the first time I heard it – not sure what it reminds me of (The Twelves maybe?), but it’s seriously badass!

Anyway, I think these are all great on their own merits, but you guys let me know what you think.
