Monthly Best of the Blogosphere: February 2012

Hi friends.

I have received a lot of comments and messages over the last few months about the lack of Best o’ features. Sorry. The only explanation I can offer is that it’s really hard to stay on top for a full month to find this much free music, check copyrights, and then to finally put it together. I know how popular this series is, and it’s not going anywhere. Now that I’ve gone full time on the site, I have a new energy for publishing; I really enjoyed putting this article together for you, and I hope you’ll leave me some kind words (or h8) in the comments.

So.. welcome back to the monthly best of the blogosphere – the hardest, most time consuming article I write every month on this site so that you animals, waiting at your computers on the first like vultures circling a dying water buffalo, can listen to a veritable orgasm of awesome music all in one place.

Everything available for download here is good clean remix art, made available for free by the creators. You’ll notice that there are other tracks I’ve chosen to include via embedded soundcloud players; these are songs that I believe need your attention, but I cannot give away.

Monthly Best of the Blogosphere: August 2011

The biggest story this month was obviously the confusion over two nearly identical tracks, by Avicii and Leona Lewis respectively (the latter of which received remix attention from Afrojack). The critical details seem to be that Avicii, while shopping for vocalists for Penguin (or at least shortly before he had finished recording vocals/shortly before he was set to release the vocal version – Fade Into Darkness), found out that Leona Lewis had recorded her own vocals on a track now known as Collide. It’s like they say, imitation is the highest form of flattery.

Some other cool stuff happened too. Calvin Harris released a new track “Feel So Close” with a great remix package, including Benny Benassi (my favourite, below) and Nero. Speaking of Nero, Skrillex collab’d with the UK dubstep heavyweights to remix their latest ‘Promises’ to great effect. And they weren’t the only two heavyweight production outfits to get together on a track – Diplo and Datisk put their talents together to create ‘Pick Your Poison’, which I think is a brilliant track, complete with catchy vox and crazy switchups (as is tradition).

There was so much other action this month that I could wax on, but I’ll let you get straight to the goods!

Monthly Best of the Blogosphere: July 2011

Two important things happened in music this month. First, tracks that people have been speculating would become the festival hits of the summer did (Save the World), others didn’t, and still yet some managed to come out of left field (Party Rock). Second, Moombahton gained some notoriety in the popular music hivemind, with plenty of poorly written magazine articles and blog posts titled “WTF IS MOOMBAHTON” proclaiming Dave Nada the father of a new genre, explaining little more than moombahton = Moombah slowed to 108.

Here’s my take on moombahton. I think it’s fun, and a great summer sound. I think it’s adaptable, as several artists (especially from the UK) are proving that it can be infused with latin elements, and generally be less aggro than its dutch house origins. As a result of these two characteristics, a ton of top notch artists (not exhaustive) – Dillon Francis, Diplo, Skrillex, Torro Torro, and Munchi – are making enjoyable, innovative, high quality tunes. Unfortunately, there’s also a moombahton gold rush going on, as every bedroom producer is trying to capitalize on the genre’s infancy by flooding the blogosphere with low quality pitch-bent mashups.

Top Five Outstanding Originals/Remixes of the Month

Each time I do the monthly best of, I usually single out a couple really outstanding compositions but ranking them is a new endeavour. Sure its totally subjective and is probably going to cause a bunch of fuss, but you know what? …I have the blog, so I’m right. It gets a little hazy after #1, but at least there is an extremely clear top dawg this month; Bare & Datsik’s original dubstep track ‘King Kong’ is probably going to be in every dubstep set I drop until October.

Outstanding Track of the Month: Deadmau5 – HR 8938 Cephei

Deadmau5 released a track, named after the north star, a few weeks ago on his Soundcloud channel. It rose in listens extremely quickly, and Mau5trap released it on Beatport shortly after where it quickly hit #1 on the overall Beatport Chart. It’s one of my favourite tracks from Joel in the last while, and is my favourite style of his – melodic, rolling, downtempo.

Best Album Release of March: The Weeknd – House of Balloons

I am totally unafraid to say that The Weeknd, whose debut album (mixtape) dropped in mid-March, is the next Burial. The seamless blending of 2-Step/UK Garage, ambient, dubstep, and house is not derivative however – far from it, House of Balloons marks a continued progression of electronic music in Toronto, which artists like Azari & III and countless others have done much to push forward.

Another great month for music has just passed, and so here I am doing a roundup again. The outstanding track of the month for me is Torro Torro’s remix of Riviera’s 40 Thieves, releasing in the next few days. There were great tracks from just about every genre, but sparser sounding house is represented most in this list, like the Adele remix, or Treasure Fingers’ take on Senor Stereo’s track. There is also some unstoppably funky stuff, like the MSTRKRFT remix of DFA’s Sexy Results, the new Breakbot release off Let the Children Techno, and the Armand Van Helden remix of the Bag Raiders’ latest.

Best of the Blogosphere: February 2011

As is usual, this month’s instalment of Best of the Blogosphere includes 30 of the hottest tracks that floated boats in the last 30 days. Every artist mentioned in this post has their own archive on the site, so if you like one in particular check their links at the bottom of this post to find more of their tunes. So my new puppy has been getting me in to a lot of free meals and out of a lot of trouble lately, so I figured I would try the ploy again with you guys and gals to try and make amends for this being a day late. As a bonus, this month’s Best of is not one buck short.

There is so much fire on this list that it could melt the “Snowmageddon” currently assaulting my city of Toronto, and any hearts that this sweet dog could not. In fact, I would venture to guess that this is the most outstanding best of yet, with tons of amazing stuff from every genre – especially in the dubstep and house departments. Monthly Best of the Blogosphere: The 30 Hottest Songs December 2010

There were two releases this month that had a huge impact. The first was Girl Talk’s album ‘All Day’ which is definitely his best work to date. It’s more coherent, less manic, and just really fun and enjoyable to listen to. You can get it free from his website.

The second big release was Deadmau5′ new album. Also by far his best to date (and that’s saying a lot). There’s a little bit of everything on here, covering all of his influences and interests, from electro to dubstep, and downtemp prog stuff with airy female vocals. I think the best track on this album is far and away ‘Raise Your Weapon’, but maybe I’ve just listened to Animal Rights or Sofi Needs a Ladder too many times. If you haven’t picked this album up yet, do it NOW. This IS one of the best albums of 2010, hands down.

Deadmau5 also had an enormous release via his soundcloud channel this month. He posted a snippet that went super viral, and has since received about 300,000 plays – it received 100,000 in the first week!

The other two REAALLLLY big tracks of the month were definitely A-Trak’s fantastic remix of Robyn’s new single Indestructible, and a fresh release by The Prodigy that went viral.

Monthly Best of the Blogosphere: November 2010

Electro house stuff had a huge month on my playlist in October, and its increasing play time is a trend that’s sure to continue for at least the next couple weeks. For one, every show I do now for under-25s demands at least 75% electro, which in most cases I’m happy to oblige with (excepting when I have an electro-induced headache): the party-favourite this month was the Katy Perry remix, followed by the Kesha remix. Biggest crowd response was for Knockin Boots at their first-rate opening set for Jack Beats on Halloween – best set I’ve seen them perform yet, and they made it damn hard for Jack Beats to follow them! The other two standout originals are huge tracks that deserve your attention.

I’ve also been listening to a TONNE of house this last month. I simply cannot wait until AN21/Vangeli release their remix of Pendulum’s The Island. I love the album version, but man did these guys ever step it up a notch. No surprise that they have the same knack for epic sounding instant-classics as Angello. The disco and funky stuff hasn’t been getting as much play time for me as of late, despite the surplus of stuff I had for this article – my upcoming mix, to be released in the next week, is straight vocal house so I’ve been on that tip non-stop in my home sessions.

I came across a couple fun dubstep tracks this month, but nothing too crazy or lasting.
