Escape from Electric Mountain is a brilliant bit of departure from Feed Me’s earlier electro-house driven EPs. You’ll still get that trademark glitch-meets-dubstep sound, but you shouldn’t be surprised to hear a fair amount of progressive house tracks mixed in with the bunch which are, frankly, a breath of fresh air.

I really wish the intro swing of One Click Headshot continued throughout the song; it’s a delicious bit of stomping that gives the entire track a much-needed groove. Comparisons will be drawn to Skrillex’s ‘Reptile’ — some vocals sound directly sampled – and I guarantee a good amount of mixes and mashups of the two tracks. I’m a bit more excited by the crazy bit of headshot rant sampling that gamers may recognize from the Toronto-based webseries Pure Pwnage. It’s probably the most cheerful track on the EP.

Trapdoor and Whiskers are great examples of what an effective music collaboration /should/ be; there aren’t any distinct ‘you take this part, I take that part’ sections. Feed Me melds his own sound with that of Hadouken! and Gemini seamlessly.

If you’re going to take any one track as evidence of Feed Me’s progression as a producer it’s got to be Relocation. The prog-house chords are a nice Deadmau5-influenced bit of the album. Watch out for the Blood Red easter egg.

Trichitillomania (despite sounding alarmingly like his previous track Chain Smoker) is probably the most recognizably ‘Feed Me’ track off of the EP, and features some great crunchy synths. Embers is a personal favourite. Originally, I felt that this bastard child of prog and electro jumped genres a little too often without warning. It took me a few listens to really think of it as a cohesive track, but after a few dedicated sessions I warmed up to it.

If you’re coming to this album expecting another straight-out ‘trademark’ track from this album (see also: Cloudburn, Pink Lady, Strange Behaviour) you probably won’t find it. There are plenty of high-energy quality tracks (Whiskers, Trapdoor) and fun bits of crunchy electro (Trichitillomania, One Click Headshot) but the whole album definitely takes on an exploratory tone. I find that a lot of albums written on tour such as this one lack a certain depth, or perhaps something differs in the mastering. The bass could have been a little more intense, the highs just a little more soaring. But these are minor grievances; the EP is a great listening experience from beginning to end and what it may lack in any capacity is made up for in sheer originality. An Escape from Electric Mountain, indeed.

Feed Me’s Escape From Electric Mountain is available now on Beatport.

Clockwork, also known as Henry Steinway from NYC, most well known for his remix of Avicii’s “Levels”, in honor of his 21st Birthday has remixed the Beastie Boys. He choose one my favorite Beastie Boys songs “Sabotage”, and executed the remix with great style.

Separate from the more electronic aspects of the track, he expertly mixes in the guitar riff intro of the original. The song starts off building up suspense, recycling a small sample of the guitar riff while accompanied with some basic snare and drum beats. Then further into the song he gradually introduces an earth-pounding bass line. I thought that at that moment that I was gonna hear the drop, but no – he does it again, building yet more suspense, using a another section of the guitar riff before providing relief.

Beastie Boys - Sabotoge (Clockwork 2012 Bootleg).mp3

The drop is magnificent. He uses a beat that sounds akin to industrial strength springs being plucked by a sledgehammer. Recycling back and forth from the guitar riff, and even including some rapping from the original (a sin otherwise); I’d say this is one hell of a remix.

He does so much more with this track, that I would love to go into, but alas it’s a 6 minute track, and I don’t have the time.

Avicii - Levels (Clockwork Remix).mp3

He also released an EP on Beatport a few months ago called “Breaker”.

Here is a Minimix from his soundcloud:
Breaker EP Minimix- Clockwork by ClockworkMusic

And also hear is a note from Henry Himself:

What up world,

In light of all of these label pushbacks and delays, and because I turn 21 today, I’m in the giving mood and I figured you guys deserved a gift from me in the form of free music. I put a big room twist on one of my favorite Beastie Boys songs “Sabotoge,” and ll you have to do is “like” my facebook page to access the free download!

Expect SO much new music from me in these coming months, including remixes for Steve Aoki, Mustard Pimp, Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike, collaborations with some of my personal favorite artists, and my LONG awaited Squad Up EP coming in March on Dim Mak. So for now, listen, download, share, and enjoy this bootleg, and get ready for a big year.

- Clockwork

(And here is a little diddy of mashup we did on him a while back, this song isn’t even on his soundcloud)

Popeska is a 19 year old Atlanta native by the name of Ralf who has a great take on dubstep, electro, and glitch music. For example, his track ‘Lololololol’ exhibits a very upbeat feel in the midst of its monstrous growling basslines. And then there’s ‘Oh!’ which, I must assume, has a top comment on youtube that reads something like “dirtier than shit stained underwear.”

And then there is Firefly, a song that combines very trancey elements with a glass-scratching glitch beat, and which sounds reminiscent of Figure. Popeska is definitely a producer with some talent!

Keep a look out for him, and comment on the article with how you think his name is pronounced; he didn’t respond to my email so maybe you guys can give it a shot.

As I was the one who wrote the review for Skrillex’s Bangarang EP, I felt it was my duty to inform all of you that there is a remix of Breakn’ A Sweat that far outdoes the original, IMHO.

Zedd (one of Skrillex’s close friends/collaborators/protegés) has made a mindblowing banger that takes Skrillex’s original and honestly kicks its ass. He brings it back down to electro tempo and adds his signature throaty wobble, and his intricate and cohesive synthwork over the whole track goes above and beyond many of his other productions.

If this is the direction Zedd is going, then jump on the bandwagon now!

I first became excited about ADWR in late 2010, when they came out of the gates strong with a wicked remix of Dada Life’s Unleash the F*cking Dada. The track, predictably, blew up as did their booking schedule, and ever since their productions have been ever increasing in quality.

It looks as though the pair have branched out somewhat from their hard electro-dubstep origins, and have a variety of upcoming productions spanning the major bass genres of the moment (moombahcore, electro-dubstep, & electro house). They successfully pair the raviest of elements against more melodic bits, and obviously have nailed down their complextro-style dubstep sound.

Hats off. Can’t wait to be delighted further by these gents in 2012.

For this week’s edition of the Mixcast, I’m proud to feature Ant Brook’s first podcast of the year. This one features a new track from the man himself, his usual top notch chart selections, and an unreal guest mix from 1605 label-boss Umek – a label we covered extensively in 2011, especially following the release of Pleasurekraft’s Satyr Song.

I can only think of (less than) a handful of artists regularly releasing high quality, regular podcasts – The Magician, Aeroplane, Designer Drugs, and of course Ant Brooks. So hats off to him, both for keeping it regular and just so good. Quality artists putting together regular charts is so much rarer than it should be – they’re in the position to do it best.

Though perhaps that’s the point. There are a still a LOT of artists out there that are old school acetate/white label dudes (read: DJs that won’t tell you what that song was). The Magician, for as good as his “Magictapes” are, don’t include a tracklist. For me, I have so much to listen to that I won’t even press play unless it has a tracklist. And it’s always been my policy that a mix doesn’t get published on Salacious unless I have one.

What do you guys think? Do you care if an artist provides a tracklist? Would you like to see mixes without tracklists on Salacious, if it meant I could publish mixes more frequently?

Tracklist

Opening Tracks

Ant Brooks – Sometimes [Suara]
Falko Niestolik, Roter, Lewis – That Sound [Factomania]

4 – Umek & Uto Karem – Crossing The Lines [1605]
3 – Belocca & Jorgensen – In My [Adapt]
2 – Jay Lumen – As One [Pure]

It’s the case that forward-looking and quality of production are properties of music that almost invariably sit on opposite ends of a spectrum, but Crosstown Rebels really broke that model in 2011 with a string of releases for artists such as Maceo Plex, Subb-an, Damian Lazarus, Soul Clap, Art Department, and Deniz Kurtel (to name just a few of the extremely talented musicians working with Crosstown Rebels).

2012 is going to be just as big – certainly, the bookings are rolling in for these artists now, and there is a very good chance that we will see the sound they’ve been crafting and pushing forward cross over in to the fore of global dance music.

Artists can be an awful pain in the ass when it comes to publishing recordings of their live performances. They play tracks that aren’t supposed to be on the internet, they play stuff they might not want to be identified with period, and they make mistakes which, while transparent in a loud nightclub where 95% of the clientele are bombed, come through in different mediums (ie your headphones).

So it’s no small feat that local Toronto label x show producer Provoke is getting world class artists like Chris Lake and Prok & Fitch to publish recordings of their performances.

I say kudos, to both the artists and Provoke. It’s been too long that artists have held on to the idea that people are mysteriously not going to go see their live performance “if they can just listen on the internet”. Bollocks. The fans that love you, and are going to enjoy this content most will support you always. The ones who you haven’t converted yet may just be convinced by your mix getting out there on the internet. And if one or two actually don’t show up because they heard your mix on the internet.. well, you probably don’t want those kids at your show anyway. They probably thought your track-selection or mixing sucked.

Thank you to Chris Lake and Provoke for this awesome content! Lets start working on the tracklist in the comments!!
