Download Nicolas Jaar's eclectic, 2-hour long BBC Radio 1 Essential Mix (featuring: Jay-Z, Jonny Greenwood, Aphex Twin, Feist, NSYNC, The Field and many, many more)

The latest edition of BBC Radio 1′s Essential Mix series is quite an expansive affair. Composed by the American-Chilean minimalist DJ/producer Nicolas Jaar, this adventurous mix spans across a wide range of the musical spectrum. A quick skim of the tracklist will reveal that Jaar is very open-minded when it comes to music. Everything from hip-hop (Jay-Z) to film scores (Jonny Greenwood) to gospel (Lashun Pace) to folk (Feist, Bill Callahan) to Top 40 pop (NSYNC!?) are present in the mix. On paper, Nico’s set appears to be all over the map, a jumble of varying genres with no overt compatibility. However, upon first listen, you will find that Jaar’s mix is truly coherent. With masterful poise and tact, Mr. Jaar layers ambient sound washes over multifarious vocal samples and minimalist drum patterns. Jaar is greatly indebted to fellow Chilean and electronic pioneer Ricardo Villalobos. Jaar’s lush, downtempo, classically-inclined approach to electronica is highly reminiscent of Villalobos’ distinct style of IDM. In this day and age, it’s rare to find a musician with such diverse musical knowledge and styles. Nicolas Jaar‘s music is a refreshing change of pace in a present-day electronica scene obsessed with maximalism and redundant club music conventions.

Trance prodigy Matan Zohar‘s latest single “The Sky” first premièred on the 419th instalment of Above & Beyond‘s ‘Trance Around the World’ podcast series. Today, “The Sky’ was officially released as a Beatport Exclusive by way of A&B‘s renowned Anjunabeats label. Here’s what they had to say about it:

“With his recent “The Bipolar EP” picking up support from DJs as diverse as A Trak, Above & Beyond, Afrojack, Steve Aoki and Arty, the London sensation Mat Zo delivers another impressive release with the classy vocal track “The Sky”; featuring the distinctive vocals of Linnea Schossow.

With two contrasting mixes that showcase Mat’s ability to master different vibes, “The Sky” also sees the London-based producer deliver his first ever vocal track with serious aplomb.

A dancefloor killer and musical journey rolled into one, the extended mix of “The Sky” builds elegantly with a symphony of synths and leads into a sweeping breakdown full of warm melodies and Schossow’s distinctive, searching tones. Lifting off with an epic thrust on the drop, “The Sky” is a classy, crossover anthem that brings together elements of house, progressive and trance into a unique blend.”

Purchase “The Sky” here.

As a bonus, Mat has released a “North American Fun Bus Mix” in support of the ‘Language’ tour with Porter Robinson and The M Machine. If the ‘Fun Bus Mix’ is any indication of what Zo‘s live set will be like, June 21 is going to be the wildest night of my life.

John Roman has finally come out of reclusion. The second edition of his Reclusion mixtape series is finally available. It includes a wide range of new material that manages to blur the lines between genres. This edition of the mixtape features no remixes or edits and is 100% Roman. As an artist his evolution over the past 3 years has been something special to watch. From a hypemachine hitmaker who rose to the top of those charts to someone who has become firmly routed in the dance music community.

The last time I, like many others, was this excited to see Roman perform was for his debut at The Social in Toronto 3 years ago at Monday Meetings (RIP). You can catch Roman this Friday at Course of Time. RSVP HERE

“Reclusion 2” is the second installment in John Roman’s infamous mix series of unreleased material. Although unlike the first, “Reclusion 2” features no remixes, no bootlegs and no edits – instead 8 new original tracks.

Inspired by and as a product of his solitary and obsessive work habit, the Reclusion series is an insight into Roman’s process and evolution as a producer. Sounds ranging from tribal to techno to UK funky to footwork, “Reclusion 2” is rarely ever one genre, but always unmistakably John Roman.

It has been amazing to see the evolution of John Roman’s career first hand. We were one of the first places to post his Heads Will Roll remix. From there he has evolved with a sharp musical acumen while developing into a worldly and multidimensional electronic musician who is well respected by his peers.

The mixtape will be released next Wednesday. You can catch Roman in Toronto on Friday night at Course of Time, our good friend Mr. Charlton’s monthly showcase and residency. Roman is amongst good company as this monthly event has played host to top tier talent including Rynecologist, Dinamo Azari, Thomas Von Party, and Bordello.

Check out the Facebook event by clicking the flier below

Light Year recently paid a visit to Toronto to headline an afterhours alongside Dinamo Azari and Egyptrixx. Though I was unable to attend in time for their set when I finally rolled in there were nothing but words of praise from many respected party goers. The mix features contributions from Canadians Caribou, Nautiluss, Tiga, Azari and III. The tracklist alone is enough to get anyone interested in “deep” sounds at least a little bit excited. Most importantly, it makes me envious that I was unable to arrive on time on Friday night.

Rustie’s recent contribution to the BBC Radio 1′s renowned Essential Mix program is monumental. Just two straight hours of frenzied electro-pop, heavy crunk beats, throwback R&B, sultry house, coyote howls and everything in between. Rustie‘s set just destroys from all quadrants. Highlights include: a VIP mix of “City Star”(!), new Lone and Obey City tracks, the transition from Yeezy’s “King of Hearts” remix to “Hovertraps” and an appearance from Destiny’s Child. Early contender for Essential Mix of the Year? I’d say so.

Every week we put our trust in a DJ to curate a selection of songs that you absolutely need to hear. This week: an hour-long set of progressive house put together by Toronto producer Chris Ramos, with several of his own bootlegs and edits. This one is sure to get hands in the air.

So for this week’s Mixcast I’ve managed to coerce local Chris Ramos in to putting together an hour-long feature of the music he’s been busy producing, and the music he has been playing out (and I expect we’ll be hearing some of these tunes when we play together tonight at The Hoxton!)

Chris’ story is one which is becoming more and more typical for the cream which has been rising to the top of the electronic music scene – a classically trained pianist since a young age, found recording when he was 16, and now has the support of the fantastic local scene in Toronto that will allow him to push his original and remix production game forward.

I couldn’t be more excited; his bootleg work displays both a strong musicality, and an attention to detail. And if I’m being honest, in our industry it is absolutely about the attention to detail. Porter Robinson, who Chris has played with, said himself “it’s more about attending to small details that no one else may notice than it is about being really talented.”

What happens when you find both in one artist is something special though, and so I’m excited to see this artist’s career develop because it’s clear to me that Chris embodies both.

Every week we put our trust in a DJ to curate a selection of songs that you absolutely need to hear. This week: 26 minutes of fast-paced, heavy, bouncy dance grooves from New York label boss and heavy bass champion of the world Drop the Lime.

This week’s Mixcast features a minimix put together by Luca Venezia for RAUW, featuring some exciting tracks upcoming on Trouble & Bass in 2012. Zombies For Money and Party Crashers have their tracks featured, ‘Boom! Boom!’ and ‘Brooklyn VIP’ respectively. Also featured is Drop the Lime’s upcoming remix of AC Slater’s ‘Sidewinder’, and a couple special remixes of Shake Baby Shake and Bandit Blues.

While I love listening to Luca’s DJ sets, where he really shines as an artist is in his live sets played with the band. It gives the audience a way to connect with the music, and understand visually what’s going on. It’s a spectacle. Luca’s vocals are incredible. And last but not least, there’s something special about hearing a song you love played live – perhaps it’s a feeling that this is a ‘version’ made just for you, completely unique, that no one will ever hear again, or maybe it’s the rawness that it imbues his tunes with which is appealing.

The one thing we can be certain of is that Trouble & Bass artists are indeed living up to the war cry “Heavy Bass Champions of the World” in 2012.

The Worldwide Gallery Traxx 2012 Mixtape is based upon somewhat of an idiosyncratic concept. Featuring nine tracks from the likes of: Brenmar, M.E.S.H., Craxxxmurf, Dju Dju, Pictureplane, Asa Cossaboom, Slava, LILINTERNET, and o F F Love; the mix is built around samples from 100 telephone conversations with gallery receptionists across the world concerning said “Worldwide Gallery’s” white cube interior. I’m not quite sure if this is meant to hold some deeper meaning (about receptionists?) or whether it is a stylistic choice but nonetheless, it creates an aura of mystery around the project.

In regards to the musical style, all 9 tracks on the mixtape seem to fit into what I would call ‘nu-rave’. Often-times we hear Skrillex or Deadmau5 being heralded as the leaders of a ‘new rave generation’ and while they have their place, I would argue that artists such as Pictureplane, LILINTERNET, Teengirl Fantasy and Unicorn Kid (former 2 not featured on the mixtape) are the underground kingpins of the real ‘nu-rave’. The Worldwide Gallery Traxx Mixtape is a good place to start if you’re are unfamiliar with this esoteric ‘rave’ sound. Taking cues from hip-hop and R&B (as is the latest trend in electronica) Brenmar starts off the mix with silky smooth synth and a bass-heavy rhythm. Other highlights include Craxxxmurf‘s whimsical Rihanna-sampling cut “Best Time I Never Had”, Asa Cossaboom‘s super-charged rave anthem “Don’t Have to Call Me” and LILINTERNET‘s Waka Flocka Flame-sampling hardstyle rave track “Paintin”. All the tracks on the mixtape share this common ‘nu-rave’ aesthetic that encompasses retro rave, R&B/hip-hop, and progressive house stylings. They tend towards new experimental sounds and that is exactly what I believe a contemporary adaptation of a pre-existing genre should do. The artists on this mixtape, although they may sound obscure to you, are pushing the boundaries of rave and electronica in general. They don’t settle for the usual or what’s popular, instead, they explore new territory. No one likes a re-hash anyways.

This week: San Francisco bass purveyor Kastle throws down a 52 minute set of bass focused, largely instrumental, often off-beat, hip-hop, dubstep, garage, and techno-inspired tracks.

This week the musician behind our Mixcast is a very exciting up-and-comer currently hailing from San Francisco. For the last couple years, the project which Barrett Richards formed in Pittsburgh over 2009-2010 has been receiving exposure on two fronts.

First, Richards’ worldwide touring efforts have seen him appearing in European and North American markets, and at major festivals like EDC last summer. Chances are, if you went to shows last summer you ended up spotting one of his stickers.

Second, the tracks that Kastle has been putting out have received attention from a variety of artists, labels, and other highly respect curators. A small selection of his tireless and extremely high quality production work includes remixes for Example, Blu Mar Ten, Craze, a release on Slow Roast Records, heavy support from SMOG and co, and critical acclaim from curators at XLR8R and BBC Radio 1.

I’m personally looking forward to catching him with several of my favourite artists of the moment at The Mohawk next Friday during SXSW. The lineup includes Flinch, Codes, Breakage, Alvin Risk, and NiT GriT.

it’s where you take them

When Worthy moved from DC to San Fran over a decade ago, I wonder if he could guessed the success he’d find.

As a DJ, he has become quite accomplished – he’s played the Hive in Switzerland, Sankeys in the UK, Electric Pickle in Miami, and Mezzanine in San Francisco, and at festivals like Ultra, Love Parade, and Burning Man. And that’s not to mention the residency he scored at dirtybird’s monthly party in Golden Gate Park!

As a producer, he’s had two Beatport top tens in 2009 and 2011. And in 2012 his production style continues to evolve, with a recent release on Alive Records. His mix, and this week’s Mixcast, was also featured on Alive Records’ podcast.

It’s rare to find a selector these days that can seamlessly blend techno, deep + tech house, and breakbeat. And it’s rarer still to find one that cares about all the genres enough to incorporate them.

This week’s Mixcast in five words:

MAKE THAT BOOTY CLAP, GIRL!

Worthy on Facebook

Every Saturday we feature a DJ mix that you absolutely need to hear. This week, Bro Safari’s mix for Moombah+ radio caught our attention.

Though the name may be new to some, don’t let it fool you – Nick Weiller aka Bro Safari is a bass veteran. For the last several years he’s been 1/3 of drum & bass super group Evol Intent – also home to Ashley Jones, or Treasure Fingers as you may know him.

Bro Safari is not the second, but is in fact actually just one of four projects he has on the go at the moment. Says Weiller “I don’t really find it that difficult… I’m able to do my part and then sign off until the next time. Not to mention, technology has made it so easy to share files. I’m literally almost never in the same room with someone else when I work on music.”

Certainly though, Bro Safari may be the most exciting project for him at the moment. He’s recently been swapping remixes with Codes and working suspiciously close with Torro Torro. Moreover, he has gotten looks from Diplo & Dillon Francis – his recent single Da Worm was released on Mad Decent imprint Jeffries.

Press the moombutton and speakers on blast.

Every Saturday we feature a DJ mix that you absolutely need to hear. This week: Maceo Plex takes over the BBC 1 decks for the world’s most popular mix show, the Essential Mix.

Eric Estornel is a US-born + Spain-based DJ/Producer who has been releasing records for a dozen years, formerly under the alias Maetrik. As recently as 2009 however, Estornel switched gears from dark sounding techno to lush, funky, and the deeper sounds of the lauded Crosstown Rebels label.

Indeed, Estornel’s new project Maceo Plex has done much to define the sound of what is perhaps the most critically-acclaimed label in house music right now. Moreover, he is part of a revolution in house music that is sweeping America that is uniting lovers of disco, tech house, uk funky, garage, and other disparate production styles and genres.

Mark my words: after he plays the most important party at Ultra Music Festival in Miami on March 24th – I’m talking about the 7th installment of Crosstown Rebels’ Get Lost, of course – Maceo Plex will be one of the most demanded performers in electronic music.

Sounds like hyperbole, but check the line-up:

This week’s installment of the Mixcast features a pair of Toronto brothers, Andrew and Jonathan, who are renowned for their versatility and expert mixing ability. The pair have a reputation in Toronto for being top-shelf bass music selectors who span genres, even within a set. That’s why they’re constantly tapped to play the best parties in Toronto, including a recent set at Bassmentality supporting Drop the Lime.

For more on this pair, dubbed ‘one to watch’ by Bassmentality, check out an in-depth interview from two weeks ago.

Tonight the FranDiscos will be playing Toronto’s premier Moombahton event, S L O W E D, for the Saturday February 11, 2012 edition along with residents Torro Torro, and this installment’s headliner DJ Ayres. Full event details here.
