Michael Jackson Top of the Charts

Ironic that he would get exactly what he wanted back, through his death.  I was reading today that already since his death more of his music has sold than has in the past 11 years.  The top 15 albums on Amazon, and several top spots on itunes too all belond to MJ.  The outpouring of remixes on the blogosphere is incredible too.

I knew that this would be the hot topic this weekend, but it’s pretty impressive just how massive the public outpouring has been.  Between 6 and 8pm yesterday 42,000 of his songs were played on Amazon, thousands of news articles were written, and tens of thousands of tweets, blog posts, and other social networking messages were sent out.  I guess I’m wondering to myself this – if you made even a very low estimate of the number of people that have had MJ on their mind this weekend, say 3,000,000 people, and you then estimated that they each spent an average of two minutes thinking/writing about his death, and you put all that time together, what could you do with that time?  6 man-years is what it would amount to, and the truth is that’s probably a huge underestimation.

Wow. Most of this is trash that’s an insult to Michael’s memory.
The Frankie Knuckles remix is great though.

  2. Mark says:

It all seems pretty ridiculous to me. As soon as any public figure dies now there’s a rush to join the inevitable huge outpouring of collective grief.

Michael Jackson was a very talented pop star and it’s a shame he’s not with us any more. But that’s it.

yeh.. assuming what he wanted was record sales, and not death. death salivated over by revenue hungry media and fans that didnt support him during his life.

  6. Saigo says:

    Mark, are you kidding?
Take some time to truly appreciate the impact Michael had. His music videos revolutionized the consumption of entertainment media for the masses and created a format that is largely still used in pop today. His dancing broke barriers and elevated the art to unprecedented levels of popularity and proficiency. His consistent innovation in several avenues of artistic expression helped to spearhead cultural change for DECADES. To call him an icon is an understatement. Lots of people are upset about the apparent insincerity of the public’s MJ praise, but the fact is death DOES change everything… Its simply naive to not expect this level of collective mourning. After all, we are talking about someone who will be remembered with the likes of Shakespeare and Da vinci in coming centuries.

  7. TheMonarch says:

To further Saigo’s remarks i would have to state that MJ was the first person who was raised by the public and forced to go through every stage of his life publicly. It should come as no surprise that the public is mourning his loss. Furthermore, people used to pass out watching him perform, the man was bigger than the beattles, and they were bigger than jesus. (maybe an overstatement, but certainly a thought.)

Michael Jackson is just astounding. All of the entire world misses you significantly! No-one could possibly debate that Michael has not changed pop songs and pop culture worldwide.
