Common's strength was, as mentioned above, in his slick jazzy sound (like in Be and Go) or in grittier acoustic or vocal-based beats like in The Food or The Corner (a personal favorite)... hip-hop today has wayyy too many Kanye-style over produced tracks, and it would have been refreshing if Common had stuck to his strength and avoided the allure of the synthesizer.
