Tracks Leaked for Common’s Upcoming Album
written by DJ Cal
2nd December 2008

One of these has been floating around for more than a week now, and with the release date of December 9th quickly approaching the entire album has leaked in various formats.  I really like the sound of Universal Mind Control and What a World, but I’m sad to say that the collab with Kanye is not the best.

For sure, this is a much different sound for Common – a departure from his very jazzy roots.  The beats sound much less instrumental and more synthetic.

Have a listen for yourself, and let us know what you think!

Yeah, the Kanye collab isn’t good. The lyrics are typical, and hilarious:

    Kanye: “I’m already too fllllyy”

    Right.

As a note to the above, it’s actually too bad. The Food is still one of the best tracks Common has ever done, and that was a Kanye collab.

Definitely.. that’s one of my favorite tracks actually. I also really like tracks like Be and Go, and like I said in my post, I feel like that jazzy feel has been lost, at least from what I’ve heard so far.

Can’t say that I’m much of a fan of any of these tracks… Common’s strength was, as mentioned above, in his slick jazzy sound (like in Be and Go) or in grittier acoustic or vocal-based beats like in The Food or The Corner (a personal favorite)… hip-hop today has wayyy too many Kanye-style over produced tracks, and it would have been refreshing if Common had stuck to his strength and avoided the allure of the synthesizer.
