Kanye ain’t shit

For anyone who’s been living under a rock, Kanye’s new album 808s and Heartbreak dropped two days ago. Of course, the individual tracks leaked weeks ago – with the first single, Love Lockdown, spinning for over a month now. As is to be expected with pretty much everything and anything Kanye, the album has been polarizing.

But, and this is an important but, Kanye ain’t shit. Sure, the hyper-use of Auto-Tune on every single track is a little much, but when it’s melded with the harsh beat of the Roland TR-808 drum machine, it’s something else, something new, something powerful. Look no further than Welcome to the Heartbreak to see the truth of this. Yes, his lyrics are empty. Yes, he’s fully of himself. But still, the guy is magnetic for his own sake. 808s and Heartbreak, in that respect, might just be his most honest album – and because of that it’s no surprise that it’s receiving so much scorn.

In any case, this album is going to be cut apart, mixed, and remixed for quite some time to come. Expect it to be paired up with just about everything in recent memory. Hell, it’s already starting with stuff like this Yelle mashup with Love Lockdown:

Wow.. I really like this album Josh. Interesting sound, like the lo-fi feel. Lyrics are interesting and passionate. A few really good beats – Say You Will, Amazing, See You In My Nightmares are all great. Autotune does get a bit tiring by the end of the album.. I REALLY like the vocoder effects on the last live track Pinocchio Story. 7.3/10
